What is a biotech supply chain?

A Biotech Supply Chain job involves managing the sourcing, production, and distribution of materials and products used in biotechnology, such as pharmaceuticals, biologics, and medical devices. Professionals in this role ensure that raw materials, laboratory supplies, and finished products move efficiently while complying with strict regulatory standards. They collaborate with suppliers, manufacturers, and logistics teams to optimize costs, minimize delays, and maintain product integrity. Effective supply chain management in biotech is crucial for ensuring that life-saving treatments reach patients safely and on time.

What are some of the main challenges faced in a biotech supply chain role?

Professionals in Biotech Supply Chain often navigate tight regulatory requirements, variable lead times for specialized materials, and the importance of maintaining cold chain logistics for sensitive products. Balancing product quality, traceability, and cost efficiency can be challenging when dealing with highly regulated and rapidly evolving processes. You’ll also frequently collaborate with R&D, quality assurance, manufacturing, and external vendors to ensure products move smoothly from development to distribution. Overcoming these challenges requires attention to detail, proactive communication, and adaptability, making the role both dynamic and rewarding for those who thrive in fast-paced environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a biotech supply chain position, and why are they important?

To excel in Biotech Supply Chain, you need strong analytical and organizational skills, industry knowledge of biotechnology supply chains, and often a bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, logistics, or a life sciences field. Expertise with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems like SAP, as well as familiarity with compliance standards such as GMP or ISO, is usually required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams set top candidates apart. These abilities ensure efficient and compliant supply chain operations, critical for meeting regulatory requirements and delivering biotech products safely and on time.

Contract Management & Commercial Oversight

- Contract Lifecycle Leadership: Partner with Legal, Quality, and Finance to draft, negotiate, and execute Master Services Agreements (MSAs), Statements of Work (SOWs), and Quality Agreements.

- Financial Accountability: Oversee the financial health of the alliances, ensuring vendor invoicing aligns with milestones, managing change orders, and tracking budget variances.

- Risk Mitigation: Conduct regular risk assessments of the external supply chain network, developing robust mitigation and contingency plans for high-risk vendor relationships.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

- Internal Alignment: Work closely with Internal Manufacturing, Process Sciences, Analytical Sciences, Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, Legal and Finance to ensure external vendor deliverables align with corporate milestones.

- S&OP Integration: Integrate vendor capacity and production schedules into Encoded’s broader Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) processes.

Requirements

- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Life Sciences, Engineering, or a related field (MBA or advanced scientific degree is a plus).

- Experience: Minimum of 8–10 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with at least 5 years dedicated to Alliance Management, External Supply, or CDMO/CMO Management.

- Contract Expertise: Proven track record of successfully managing and negotiating complex commercial contracts, SOWs, and legal frameworks in a technical environment.

- Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of cGMP regulations, drug substance/drug product manufacturing processes, and global biotech supply chain dynamics (experience with gene/cell therapies is highly desirable).

- Professional Skills: Exceptional negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to influence without authority across diverse organizational levels.
