What does a Biotech Process Engineer do?

A Biotech Process Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes processes used in the production of biological products such as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and biofuels. They work closely with scientists and manufacturing teams to scale up lab procedures to industrial levels while ensuring product quality and regulatory compliance. Their role often involves troubleshooting equipment, improving efficiency, and implementing new technologies within biotech manufacturing environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Biotech Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Biotech Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or biochemical engineering, process design, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with process control systems, bioprocess simulation software, and industry-standard quality systems such as cGMP is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you excel in cross-functional environments. These skills ensure efficient, compliant, and innovative bioprocess operations, which are critical for product quality and organizational success.

What are some common challenges faced by Biotech Process Engineers during scale-up from laboratory to production?

Biotech Process Engineers often encounter challenges when scaling up processes from laboratory or pilot scale to full production. These challenges can include maintaining product consistency, ensuring process sterility, and adapting equipment to handle larger volumes without compromising yield or quality. Engineers must also collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as quality assurance, validation, and manufacturing to implement changes efficiently and adhere to regulatory standards. Proactive problem-solving and strong communication skills are key to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring successful technology transfer.

What is the difference between Biotech Process Engineer vs Biotech Manufacturing Technician?

AspectBiotech Process EngineerBiotech Manufacturing Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in biotech, chemical engineering, or related field; often requires experience in process designAssociate's or bachelor's degree; focus on operational skills and equipment handling
Work EnvironmentDesigning, optimizing, and overseeing production processes in labs or manufacturing facilitiesOperating and maintaining equipment on the manufacturing floor
Job FocusProcess development, scale-up, troubleshooting, and process improvementExecuting production tasks, quality checks, and equipment setup

Biotech Process Engineers focus on designing and improving manufacturing processes, requiring technical and analytical skills. In contrast, Biotech Manufacturing Technicians handle day-to-day production operations. Both roles are essential in biotech manufacturing but differ in responsibilities and required qualifications.

Job description

About Again
At Again, we are advancing a new industrial era. AI-powered biocatalysts. No oil. No sugar. By combining millennia-old bacteria with cutting-edge technology, we turn waste gases into the products that matter.
We have raised over $100m in funding from both top investors such as Google Ventures or HV Capital, and leading grant funding programmes such as European Union's Horizon 2020. We are a growing team of experienced scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs from the DTU, Stanford, MIT (and more) who are passionate about revolutionizing the chemical industry.
We are leading the positive shift. Showing people that our world does have a future. If you think we're doomed - think Again.
What you'll do
We are looking for a Senior Process Engineer to (i) get our newly commissioned First-of-a-Kind (FOAK) TXS-1 gas fermentation plant in Houston, Texas, running smoothly at full nameplate capacity, (ii) assist with the design and construction of our next, much larger commercial plant, and (iii) own the commissioning and startup of this next commercial plant.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee production engineering for TXS-1, Again's first commercial gas fermentation plant
  • Manage engineers and technicians
  • Optimize and debottleneck production processes, particularly gas fermentation and related upstream equipment including media preparation. Downstream processing steps will also require your attention (see 'Preferred Requirements')
  • Ensure safe and smooth operation of all plant equipment
  • Oversee improvement projects and lead root cause analyses (RCA's)
About You
Minimum Requirements
  • You have practical experience (>5 years) in production and process engineering in a plant setting
  • Hands on experience with industrial reactors- operation, optimization, debottlenecking, troubleshooting.
  • BS in Chemical Engineering, Bioprocess Enginering, or similar
  • You are collaborative, communicative and can work closely with both our scientific and process engineering teams. You can also collaborate with and help give clear direction to our Automation personnel
  • You lead by example and can operate independently. Although you will be managing other engineers, this is not a desk job - significant presence in the field is required.
  • Willing to relocate to the Houston, TX area.
Preferred Requirements
  • Strong competence within bioprocessing and a deep understanding of gas/liquid mass transfers, sanitary design, aseptic operations, and experience with gas fermentation is a plus
  • Experience with unit operations like media prep, tangential flow/cross flow filtration, ion exchange, centrifugation, liquid-liquid extraction, and distillation is a plus
  • Experience in plant commissioning, startups, and turn-arounds
  • Project management experience and people management experience are plusses
  • Mechanically-minded ("handy") process engineers will be favored. Maybe you know how to take apart a pump, maybe you can help troubleshoot a compressor etc.
What we promise you:
  • You get to work with a group of passionate scientists and engineers, working on challenging and meaningful projects
  • This will be the journey of a lifetime - we are pioneering a new era of industrial manufacturing using biotech to make clean and resilient supply chains, and you can play a pivotal role in making that happen
  • An ambitious, empowering and engaging work environment.
  • We understand that relocating can be a hassle, so if you don't live in Houston, Texas we will help out to give you a smooth transition. Note the exact location of the FOAK production site is Texas City. US citizen or work permit is required.
  • We live by our company values: Relentless Grit, Unreasonably Ambitious, Unconventional Thinking, Critical Urgency
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance, 401k match, company equity, performance bonus, PTO and sick leave, parental leave, and a stocked kitchen.

If you have questions regarding the role, we would love to hear from you. Feel free to reach out at careers@again.bio. We look forward to hearing from you.
