Avantes is a technology and market leader in the field of fiber optic spectroscopy. Headquartered in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands Avantes has been serving the spectroscopy and photonics markets for more than 30 years. Avantes works with a variety of industries ranging from Biomedical and Semiconductor to Agriculture and Consumer Electronics. Avantes instruments can be found in laboratories of world class researchers and are also embedded in devices which save lives and increase the efficiency and quality of manufacturer and agricultural producers around the world. Avantes North American operation is based in Lafayette, CO and is seeking to fill a position for a Customer Support and Application Engineer (CSAE) to support our North American customers.

Avantes prefers to hire a local candidate for this position and so candidates residing in the general vicinity of Denver or Boulder, CO will be considered before candidates outside the area. No relocation package will be available for this position.


Purpose of the Position

Avantes is searching for a recent graduate or early career technically oriented individual with a background in engineering or computer science, life science, chemistry or physics who is interested in working with new and existing customers in a support role to our Sales Engineering team. This exciting position will play a critical role in maintaining our superb customer service and helping to grow opportunities through feasibility testing and instrument demonstrations. This is a full-time, in person position based at our facility in Lafayette, CO.


Job Description

In this position you will work closely with our Sales Engineers and customers to assist with technical issues, training and feasibility testing for customer specific applications. It is desirable that the candidate have past practical experience in operating laboratory equipment (preferably spectrometers), generating and manipulating data, as well as designing tests or experiments to vet instruments in specific applications.

Qualified candidates should have completed a BS degree in biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science or closely related majors.  Candidates with five or more years in a technical role in the Photonics industry will also be considered. The CSAE will work as a part of the Sales and Support team of Avantes North America and will liaise between our US operation and Netherlands headquarters where Engineering is headquartered. Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, teamwork and time management skills are essential. Ideal candidates will be skilled at Solidworks or other 3D modeling software and have experience with 3D printing mechanical assemblies. Previous experience with developing or troubleshooting instrument control software in Python, Labview, Matlab, C+, C#  is highly desirable but not essential.

 Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design and conduct experiments, with mentorship guidance, for customer specific projects
  • Compile data and write reports to customers summarizing findings from experiments
  • Design and facilitate the fabrication of demos for Avantes customer events and trade shows
  • Responsible for handling first level failure analysis on all RMA equipment and coordination of RMA processes with Avantes headquarters
  • Perform calibrations, minor repairs and occasional assembly on Avantes instruments.
  • Participate in research including planning, preparation, calibration, data analysis and maintenance.
  • Writing procedures and documents to assist customers with using Avantes instruments in specific end user applications
  • Developing marketing materials ranging from datasheets to videos to assist with presenting Avantes products to customers
  • Directly interface with customers and provide technical support
  • Regularly coordinate with Avantes headquarters support and applications teams
  • Occasional domestic and international travel to trade shows and Avantes headquarters


Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. 

Math Ability:

Ability to perform mathematical calculations on customer data using formulas. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. 

Computer Skills:

Proficiency with MS Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, Outlook) Proficiency with LabView/Matlab is highly desirable. Knowledge and proficiency with Solidworks or other mechanical modeling software.
