Biomedical engineering technicians, or biomedical equipment technicians, install and repair medical equipment at hospitals or other health care facilities. Your job duties and responsibilities include troubleshooting instrumentation problems, performing preventive maintenance, conducting safety inspections, testing new equipment, keeping inventory records, and instructing on or demonstrating the use of medical equipment. You will often have to explain technical matters to medical staff. You will need excellent communication and organizational skills.
| Aspect | Biomedical Engineering Technician | Medical Equipment Repair Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Associate's/Bachelor's in biomedical engineering or related field; certifications like CBET | High school diploma or technical training; certifications like CRES or equivalent |
| Work Environment | Hospitals, clinics, research labs, medical device companies | Medical facilities, service centers, equipment manufacturers |
| Job Focus | Maintaining, calibrating, and troubleshooting medical devices; supporting clinical staff | Repairing and servicing medical equipment; ensuring operational readiness |
While both roles involve working with medical devices, Biomedical Engineering Technicians focus on maintenance, calibration, and supporting clinical staff, often requiring a background in biomedical engineering. Medical Equipment Repair Technicians primarily focus on repairing and servicing equipment, typically with technical training. Both roles are essential in healthcare settings but differ in scope and required credentials.
