The Lab Manager II oversees daily operations of the lab and ensures all resources (equipment, reagents, lab ware, tools, and personnel) are scheduled. Oversees, maintains, and prepares laboratory tools and equipment and executes lab procedures.
Essential Duties:
- Ensures all lab facilities, tools, and equipment are properly maintained and anticipates equipment, production, and personnel needs
- Oversees inventory, stocking, vendor relationships, and daily finances
- Develops, communicates, and implements policies and procedures for the lab's equipment, resources, and scheduling
- Provides or arranges equipment training for lab staff
- Executes daily lab procedures
- Oversees safety management, including biosafety reviews for lab personnel
- Ensures workspace housekeeping is carried out according to health and safety standards
- Reviews all materials and supplies ordered by the assigned research group
- Coordinates the installation and successful operation of new equipment with vendors and appropriate internal ISB staff
- Resolves operational problems in the laboratory, such as space allocation, equipment and staff resources, funds, etc.
- Other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Lab Manager delegates and manages to team members to ensure the smooth operation of the lab and provides coaching to junior lab members.
Required Education, Skills & Experience:
- A Bachelor's degree in the biological or physical sciences
- Three (3) or more years of research laboratory experience
- Firm understanding of lab safety, including disposal of biological and chemical waste
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse population and range of personalities
- A strong client service
- Ability to solve problems in a lab setting
- Ability to professionally resolve conflict
- Adaptable to changing work requirements
- A high degree of professional integrity
All ISB staff members are expected to have baseline technical skills and the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately over email, the intranet/forum, etc. Employees should be able to use Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint at a functional level.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Master's degree in a relevant scientific discipline
- Experience with tissue culture, automated chromatography methods, and other chemical/biological lab techniques and equipment
- Previous experience as a lab manager
Physical Demands:
Work is in laboratory environment with regular exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and caustic or toxic chemicals. May occasionally be at risk for electrical shock or injury due to failures of laboratory and/or other equipment. Frequently requires standing for extended periods. Frequently requires repeating motions that may include hands, wrist, or fingers (e.g. using a computer keyboard); reaching with hands and arms. Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; occasionally up to 25 pounds. Regularly requires walking. Regularly required to communicate with others using voice and hearing to exchange information. Occasionally works near machinery with moving mechanical parts.

Salary: Expected pay between $90,000 - $110,000 annually
