Industry UsageCommonly employed in biologics productionUsed in biopharmaceutical manufacturing and research
Job FocusOperating bioprocess equipment, monitoring productionSupporting bioprocessing activities, data recording

The main difference between a Biologics Process Operator and a Bioprocess Technician lies in their specific roles and responsibilities. While both work in biologics manufacturing environments and may require similar certifications, the operator primarily focuses on running and monitoring bioprocess equipment, whereas the technician supports broader bioprocess activities and data management. Both roles are essential in ensuring efficient biologics production.

Are biologics process operators in demand?

Biologics process operators are in high demand due to the growth of the biopharmaceutical industry and the need for skilled workers to operate complex manufacturing equipment. Employment opportunities are often available in biotech and pharmaceutical companies, especially for those with certifications and experience in GMP environments. The role is expected to grow as biologic therapies become more prevalent in healthcare.

Do you need a degree to be a biologics process operator?

A degree is not always required to become a biologics process operator, but many employers prefer candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent. Relevant skills such as knowledge of bioprocessing equipment, attention to detail, and sometimes certification in Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) can be important for the role.

Is being a biologics process operator a hard job?

Biologics process operators are responsible for operating and monitoring equipment used in the production of biologic drugs, which requires attention to detail, adherence to strict safety and quality standards, and often involves working in cleanroom environments. The job can be physically demanding and may require shift work, but it is generally considered manageable with proper training and experience.

Where do biologics process operators make the most money?

Biologics process operators tend to earn higher salaries in regions with a strong biotech industry, such as major biotech hubs or states with significant pharmaceutical manufacturing. Factors like experience, certifications, and working in large pharmaceutical companies or contract manufacturing organizations can also influence earning potential.

Job description

Company Description

Veolia Group is a global leader in environmental services, operating across all five continentsย with nearly 218,000 employees. Specializing in water, energy, and waste management, Veoliaย Group designs and implements innovative solutions for decarbonization, depollution, andย resource regeneration, supporting communities and industries in their ecological transformation.

Within this framework, Veolia's Water Technology Business brings together a dedicated team of
experienced professionals committed to tackling the world's most complex challenges related to
water scarcity, quality, productivity, and energy. Together, we pursue a shared mission to create a
more sustainable future.

Job Description

Process Engineers on the Process Engineering team are key partners for customers in the Northย American market. They are creative technical leaders who support the successful sale, engineering,ย commissioning, and operation of complete system solutions. To deliver winning solutions, they applyย deep technical knowledge of our solutions and technologies combined with an understanding of theย customer's process, the market, regulations, and our competitors to continually balance technical riskย with commercial viability.

On complex flow sheets with multiple unit processes, a Process Engineering Project Technical Leader - Microelectronicsย is included on theย project to own the overall solution for our customer in collaboration with one or more Processย Engineers with expertise in the various technologies used in the flow sheet. A Process Engineering Project Technical Leader - Microelectronicsย requires the abilities and expertise of a Process Engineer, and the technical, leadership, andย communication skills of an Engineering Project Manager. The Process Engineering Project Technical Leader - Microelectronics requires domainย expertise to act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and technical point of contact in customer and internalย communications. From a technical perspective, they have responsibility for the overall treatmentย solution including strategizing on the creation of that solution (safety factors, flow fluctuations,ย assumptions), identifying and managing the impacts that any given unit process will have onย upstream/downstream unit processes as well as process risks, and owning the overall process flow
diagram, accompanying flow and quality balance, and overall process guarantees. From a leadershipย perspective, they proactively communicate across the team of Process Engineers, manage the processย deliverables (schedules, assignments), and represent Process Engineering in review meetings at the
bidding and engineering stages. If process issues arise, they lead the troubleshooting effort and
resolution.

As the focal point of the Process Team for projects, the Process Engineering Project Technical Leader - Microelectronics functions as a dual-path expert. Their time allocation is strategically divided into approximately 60% Communication,ย Organization, and Coordination, where they manage process deliverables, schedules, and cross-functional representation. The remaining approximately 40% is dedicated to Technical Expertise, actingย as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) who owns the overall treatment solution, including process guaranteesย and the troubleshooting of complex issues.

The Process Engineering Project Technical Leader - Microelectronics for the Microelectronics market will lead proposals and projects inย execution for our Microelectronics customers' ultrapure water (UPW), wastewater, and reclaimย treatment needs.

Key Characteristics:

  • Leadership
  • Customer focus and commercial mindset
  • Analytical mindset
  • Creativity
  • Responsibility
  • Collaboration
  • Accountability

Duties and Responsibilities:

Microelectronics Project Technical Leaders lead the process design of ultrapure, wastewater,ย and reclaim treatment solutions for the Microelectronics industry.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Align a team of Process Engineers working together on a flow sheet to a strategy (includingย influent design basis, safety factors, handling of flow variations, how to meet the customer'sย needs, how to win against the competition), a list of deliverables, and a schedule, and ensureย that all process deliverables meet quality and schedule for the project
  • Lead the design of complete water, wastewater, or waste treatment solutions (flow sheet, unitย processes, process parameters) that will meet the customer's requirements for a given influentย and required effluent stream qualities using various in house and industry design tools, acting asย the leader for a team of Process Engineers providing technical expertise on specific portions ofย the overall flowsheet.
  • Apply advanced treatment technologies including biological treatment, ammonia removal, solidsย separation, low- and high-pressure membrane treatment (ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverseย osmosis - conventional and high-pH), ion exchange, UV treatment, and gas-transfer membraneย processes to meet the stringent requirements specific to the microelectronics industry
  • Own the overall Process Flow Diagram (PFD), associated flow tables or mass balance, and overallย process guarantees, including management of the interconnections between unit processes andย consideration of any impacts of one unit process on upstream or downstream unit processes,ย with input from the Process Engineers on the team.
  • Engage in piloting and benchmarking and treatability studies as part of design, commissioning,ย troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of UPW treatment solutions
  • Serve as a lead technical contact with our customers, building partnership relationships, andย representing the team of Process Engineers working on the flow sheet together
  • Serve as the lead technical contact with other functions working together on the project
  • Identify and support management of technical risks related to the treatment process (flowย sheet, unit processes, achievement of outputs), including compiling the risks throughout theย flow sheet in collaboration with the Process Engineers on the project team
  • Troubleshoot technical issues using data and observations
  • Understand relevant regulations and liaise with regulatory agencies as needed
  • Own and be accountable for the success of assigned projects throughout project developmentย as measured by achieving treatment requirements (successful operation) and customerย satisfaction through proactive communication, collaboration, and leadership of corrective actionย management, in collaboration with the team of Process Engineers on the project
  • Demonstrate Veolia's expertise in the external market through customer and conferenceย presentations
  • Provide training and 1:1 coaching to members of the Process Engineering team
