Job description

Ready to shape the future of science and global health? A global nonprofit that provides trusted biological materials for science and health, ATCC is hiring a Senior Manager, Genome Portal Engineering to lead the modernization, development, and long-term evolution of the ATCC Genome Portal and related digital biology platforms. Embedded within the Sequencing & Bioinformatics Center, this hybrid role in Gaithersburg, MD provides technical leadership for a cloud-based platform that delivers genomic data products and capabilities to scientific users. The position will guide platform architecture, engineering execution, user experience, and the transition of development capabilities while collaborating with scientists, bioinformatics teams, product stakeholders, IT, cybersecurity, and external partners to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performing applications.

Seeking Senior Manager, Genome Portal Engineering, ideally with experience leading development of cloud-based software products or scientific data platforms and building applications used by scientists, researchers, or other technical end users, preferably with life science industry experience.   • Platform Development and Modernization: Lead the design, development, and delivery of the Genome Portal and related digital biology platforms, driving enhancements that improve usability, scalability, and long-term platform sustainability.
  • Engineering Leadership and Execution: Oversee day-to-day engineering activities, including sprint planning, technical direction, code reviews, deliverable acceptance, release readiness, and engineering best practices across internal and external contributors.
  • Architecture and Integration: Guide architecture decisions and oversee backend services, APIs, data integration layers, and integrations with enterprise systems, internal data sources, and external repositories.
  • User Experience and Application Development: Drive the development of intuitive, user-centered applications and reusable UI components that enable scientists and technical users to efficiently access, explore, and utilize genomic data products.
  • Team and Partner Management: Coordinate external development partners, help identify future engineering resource needs, and serve as a primary technical interface with product management, IT, cybersecurity, and other stakeholders.
  • Platform Reliability and Risk Management: Ensure platform performance, security, maintainability, and resilience while identifying and mitigating risks related to infrastructure, scalability, and total cost of ownership.

  • Minimum Requirement: Bachelor's degree and 12 years of experience, or equivalent experience (Master's degree and 8 years, PhD and 5 years, or HS Diploma and 16 years).
  • Demonstrated leadership of professional-level engineering teams with responsibility for operational execution, performance management, and alignment to organizational objectives.
  • Experience leading the design, development, and support of scalable, secure, and maintainable software platforms, web applications, or SaaS products, including backend services, APIs, and data integration layers.
  • Proven ability to direct engineering execution, including sprint planning, technical direction, code reviews, release readiness, and development standards.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders while integrating platforms with enterprise systems and external data sources.
  • Experience overseeing internal and external development resources to deliver high-quality engineering outcomes.
  • Preferred: Experience supporting genomic data platforms, bioinformatics, sequencing, life sciences, or scientific data environments.
  • Preferred: Experience developing applications for scientific or technical end users, including data exploration, visualization, and user-centered workflows.
  • Preferred: Experience with modern frontend development, reusable UI component frameworks, cloud-based platforms, and complex data-intensive applications.

The expected salary range for this position is $200,000 to $220,000 annually. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience and qualifications as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for additional incentive compensation including regular merit increases and the corporate bonus program.
