What is a bioinformatics software developer?

A Bioinformatics Software Developer designs, implements, and optimizes software tools for analyzing biological data, such as genomic sequences or protein structures. They combine expertise in computer science, bioinformatics, and data science to develop algorithms, databases, and pipelines that support research and clinical applications. These developers often work with researchers to streamline data processing, improve efficiency, and enable new discoveries in the life sciences. Strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or R, along with knowledge of bioinformatics frameworks, are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a bioinformatics software developer?

To thrive as a Bioinformatics Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (especially in Python, R, or Java), a solid foundation in computational biology, and typically a degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or a related field. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools (such as BLAST, Bioconductor, or Galaxy), experience with version control systems like Git, and understanding databases and cloud platforms are commonly required. Collaboration, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help facilitate effective teamwork across interdisciplinary scientific teams. These competencies are vital for developing robust software solutions that address complex biological data challenges encountered in research and healthcare settings.

What are some common challenges faced by bioinformatics software developers in their daily work?

Bioinformatics Software Developers often work with large and complex biological datasets, which can present challenges in terms of data integration, processing efficiency, and scalability. Keeping up with rapidly evolving research methodologies and integrating new scientific findings into software solutions can also be demanding. Developers must collaborate closely with biologists, researchers, and other IT professionals to ensure that the tools they build meet scientific needs and are user-friendly. Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability help in overcoming technical and domain-specific obstacles, making this a dynamic and intellectually rewarding career choice.

Job description

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

The Opportunity As a Bioinformatics Software Engineer, you will design, develop, and implement features for the bioinformatics components and pipelines that are used in Roche Sequencing products. You will be part of a team working in a fast paced environment, developing cutting-edge, distributed, scale-out Next-Generation Sequencing data analysis software to ensure the highest possible software quality for gene sequencing research and disease diagnostics.

Work closely with experimental teams to understand their requirements and translate them into functional software, implementing those solutions directly within an existing research code repository. Collaborate with research and algorithm experts, accelerating bioinformatics techniques using GPU hardware. You will navigate and contribute to a large code base, applying your knowledge of advanced bioinformatics techniques (such as alignment methods and other sequence analysis algorithms) and neural nets to continuously improve the quality and feature sets of the software products.

Who You Are

  • B.S. or M.S. or PhD in Computational Biology or Bioinformatics or Biomedical engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in working with NGS data and data analysis pipelines.
  • Strong expertise in Python, including numerical computing and data science libraries, alongside familiarity with C/C++.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, maintaining, or refactoring within a large code base or existing research code repository.
  • Understanding of core bioinformatics techniques, including alignment methods, as well as neural nets.
  • Experience collaborating with experimental teams to gather requirements and implement technical solutions.
  • Thrives in a fast paced environment, showing a self-driven, detail oriented, and analytical approach with a proven ability to learn quickly.
  • Proficiency in GCP, AWS and Linux Shell environments.
  • Be a team player, customer focused with excellent interdisciplinary collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Practical experience utilizing GPU-accelerated C/C++ libraries or knowledge of GPUs and CUDA.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools and concepts.
