How much do bioinformatics analyst jobs pay per hour?
What does a bioinformatics analyst do?
A bioinformatics analyst works with large databases of omics data, such as genomics studies like the Human Genome Project. Your responsibilities in this career include research on the pathology of diseases and the development of experiments and algorithms to find cures. Your duties also involve ensuring compliance with all federal regulations and protocols. You may document your findings and present them at conferences as well. A career as a bioinformatics analyst requires advanced writing skills for writing scientific literature.

What are some common challenges faced by bioinformatics analysts when working with large genomic datasets?
What is the difference between Bioinformatics Analyst vs Bioinformatics Technician?
| Aspect | Bioinformatics Analyst | Bioinformatics Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's or Master's in Bioinformatics, Biology, or related field; experience with data analysis tools | Associate's or Bachelor's; focus on data processing and laboratory support |
| Work Environment | Research labs, biotech companies, healthcare institutions | Laboratories, research facilities, academic settings |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Used in research, healthcare, biotech industries for data interpretation | Used for data collection, sample processing, and technical support roles |
The main difference is that Bioinformatics Analysts focus on analyzing complex biological data and interpreting results, often requiring advanced degrees. Bioinformatics Technicians typically handle data collection, sample preparation, and technical tasks, supporting analysts and researchers. Both roles are essential in the biotech and healthcare industries, but they differ in responsibilities and required qualifications.

Job description
The Koch lab is seeking a postdoctoral scientist with expertise in population genetics and a motivated interest in human genetics. Our lab develops novel methods, theory, and analysis paradigms. We are interested in linking selectional and mutational landscapes to patterns of genetic variation associated with human traits and diseases. We do this by integrating evolutionary models with GWAS, biobank, and functional genomic resources across populations to uncover broadly useful frameworks for interpreting genetic findings in human health.
Appropriate candidates will possess foundational knowledge in population genetics as well as strong quantitative and computational skills. The postdoc will lead projects where they develop and apply new methods for the analysis of human genomic data. Individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
The Koch lab is located in the Yale School of Medicine which offers an outstanding training environment for postdoctoral scientists, with state-of-the-art research facilities and vast resources to support professional development.
Responsibilities
- Develop bioinformatics pipelines for the analysis of large genomic datasets
- Derivation of novel statistical and theoretical models
- Prepare manuscripts for publication
- Attend and present at lab meetings, departmental seminars, and conferences
- Participating in collaborations with other labs and consortia
- Contribute to the mentoring of students and junior scientists in the lab
- Application for independent funding and assisting the PI in the preparation of grant proposals
Mentoring & Professional Development
We have a strong emphasis on mentorship and value the opportunity to train future leaders in human genetics. The PI will work with the successful candidate to develop and implement a mentorship plan tailor-made for their goals and interests. Mentorship will be provided for fellowship applications, manuscript writing, presentations, and independence.
The successful candidate will gain access to a range of career development opportunities at Yale. This includes seminars from internationally renowned researchers and 'Meet the Speaker' lunches, and professional development and networking activities including via the Yale Postdoctoral Association and Yale Office for Career Strategy.
Qualifications
Candidates should have or be close to obtaining a PhD in either genetics/genomics, evolutionary biology, computational biology, or a related field.
Experience with the Python programming language and the command line interface is required. Experience with one or more of the following is desired: statistical and theoretical population genetics, high performance computing environments, statistical genetics.
The ideal candidate will also demonstrate:
- A high level of drive and initiative, and track record of impactful research outcomes
- Experience writing manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Eagerness to learn and establish new methods, and good problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Desire to contribute to the mentorship of students and junior scientists in the lab
Application Instructions
Please apply with (1) a cover letter summarizing your experiences, research interests, and career goals, and why you are interested in pursuing a postdoc in our lab, (2) your CV, including contact details of three references as well as a representative manuscript, and (3) when you are available to start.
