The Bike Shop Department is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our team. The Mission of the Bike Shop Department is to provide rapid, innovative, and affordable engineering solutions and prototype fabrication that demonstrate new technologies and capabilities, from concept through flight demonstration. We also provide quick-turn innovation, design, fabrication, assembly, and test capabilities in support of existing and future program engineering needs.
 

We are looking for candidates willing to work independently and collaborate with our engineers and fabricators to develop mechanical components and systems in a dynamic, vertically integrated environment.  Projects can range from a quick proof of concept to flight hardware.
The Principal Mechanical Engineer needs to be a motivated self-starter that is responsible for the design, documentation, coordination of fabrication, integration, and test of components and systems of varying complexity. The candidate must be experienced in all aspects of the engineering development process up to and including testing/verification. This position will function as part of multi-disciplined design teams across multiple projects. This person will be the Responsible Engineering Authority (REA) or Integrated Product Team Lead (IPTL) for development of one or more complex mechanical systems and will be expected to mentor and guide less experienced team members. This position will interface with REAs, IPTLs, and other stake holders within the functional and program organizations in a fast-paced, team-based, and technical environment.
What You Will Do

  • Involvement with product lifecycle from concept development to test

  • Working in a vertically integrated environment of many disciplines

  • Rapid reaction prototyping

  • Hands on involvement with hardware

  • Mentoring of junior engineers

  • Leading and managing projects of varying scope and duration

  • Delegate and assign tasks to engineering team members based on project priorities, individual skill sets, and workload capacity, ensuring efficient and effective completion of objectives

 
Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience in mechanical engineering experience developing mechanical components and mechanical systems

  • Experience with Pro/E, CREO, or other CAD software (such as SolidWorks, NX, Fusion360, etc.)

  • Experience with Windchill or other Product Data Management (PDM) systems (such as Siemens Teamcenter, SolidWorks PDM, Autodesk Vault, etc.)

  • Experience taking a design from concept, through design, fabrication, and testing


Qualifications We Prefer

  • Masters or Ph.D. degree in STEM

  • Prior work experience in a technical mentoring or program management role, including managing schedule and resourced milestones

  • Experience with ANSYS or other Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) software (such as COMSOL, ABAQUS, Nastran, etc.)

  • Experience with MATLAB

  • Experience interpreting and implementing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Experience with design for manufacture or producibility, traditional fabrication equipment (mills, lathes, sheet metal, welding, etc.), and 3D printing

  • Cross-discipline engineering knowledge and experience

  • Experience with detailed design to verification, via integration and test

  • Experience with intellectual property creation (patents & publications)

  • Experience working around energetic materials and/or components

  • Experience overseeing a program transition from development to production

  • Working knowledge of Earned Value Management System (EVMS)

  • Ability to develop and manage cost/schedule/technical plans including management of risk and opportunities

The salary range for this role is 107,500 USD - 204,500 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
