What is a BI manager?

BI Managers, or Business Intelligence Managers, oversee the strategy, implementation, and management of business intelligence systems within an organization. They lead teams that analyze data to help companies make informed business decisions and improve processes. Their responsibilities include managing BI tools, coordinating data analysis projects, and ensuring that data-driven insights align with organizational goals. BI Managers often collaborate with IT, business stakeholders, and executive leadership to support data-driven decision making.

How do BI managers typically collaborate with other departments to ensure data-driven decision-making?

BI Managers regularly work with stakeholders across departments such as marketing, finance, and operations to understand their data needs and provide actionable insights. They facilitate communication between technical teams (like data analysts and engineers) and business units, ensuring that data solutions align with organizational goals. This collaboration often involves gathering requirements, delivering reports or dashboards, and providing training to non-technical users. Strong interpersonal and project management skills are essential for BI Managers to bridge gaps and drive effective data-driven strategies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BI manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BI Manager, you need strong analytical skills, expertise in data modeling, and a background in statistics or computer science, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, SQL, and data warehousing systems, as well as certifications like CBIP, are typically required. Leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help BI Managers effectively guide teams and translate business needs into data-driven solutions. These abilities are crucial for delivering actionable insights and driving strategic decision-making within organizations.

Job description

As an Associate - Business Intelligence within the Employee Experience organization, you will help deliver analytics solutions that enable HR and business teams to make informed decisions. In this role, you'll contribute to the buildout of new dashboards and reporting capabilities while also playing a critical part in keeping existing BI products running smoothly-maintaining and enhancing legacy dashboards, responding to ad hoc reporting needs, and ensuring data quality and governance. You'll partner with stakeholders to translate questions into actionable insights and support the adoption of modern, cloud-based BI platforms. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys a mix of new development, operational reporting, and continuous improvement in a workforce analytics environment that is rapidly transforming to a new analytics platform.
Job responsibilities:
  • Build and Enhance BI Products: Contribute to the design, development, and delivery of dashboards, reports, and curated datasets that support workforce and employee experience insights.
  • Support Ad Hoc Reporting & Stakeholder Requests: Produce timely, accurate one-off analyses and recurring reports to answer evolving business questions, including quick-turn requests and executive-ready outputs.
  • Maintain and Improve Legacy Dashboards: Own ongoing support for existing/legacy BI solutions-fixing defects, updating logic/metrics, refreshing visuals, improving performance, and ensuring continuity during upstream data or system changes.
  • Enable Self-Service Analytics: Help build and refine self-service tools and semantic layers so users can confidently explore data, understand definitions, and generate meaningful reports with less manual effort over time.
  • Ensure Data Quality, Governance, and Compliance: Support data validation, reconciliation, access controls, documentation, and alignment to governance standards to maintain integrity, security, and auditability of BI solutions.
  • Integrate with Cloud Data Platforms: Support integration of BI tools with cloud data platforms (e.g., Databricks) to improve scalability, reliability, and delivery of analytics assets.
  • Delivery Execution (Agile / Roadmaps): Contribute to planning and execution-managing work across feature development, maintenance, and ad hoc demand using agile practices, clear timelines, and stakeholder communication.

Required qualifications, capabilities and skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Analytics, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in Business Intelligence, data analysis, or a related role.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based BI tools and platforms.
  • Foundational understanding of data visualization, dashboard design, and self-service analytics concepts ideally with Tableau, Snow, or Sigma.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders and team members.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and evolving business requirements.

Preferred qualifications, capabilities and skills:
  • Exposure to HR data and analytics.
  • Experience collaborating with HR or business teams to deliver workforce insights.
  • Familiarity with integrating BI tools with cloud data platforms, especially Databricks and Snowflake.
