ICOD-Integrated Co-Occurring Disorders Peer Support Specialist/Certified Recovery Mentor for CCBHC



Peer Support Specialists/Recovery Mentors are a critical part of behavioral health treatment teams. Supporting and assisting clients with co-occurring disorders (mental health and substance use disorders) who are attempting to engage in recovery or in early stages of recovery is a critical role. Peer Support Specialists/Recovery Mentors are not counselors or clinicians but provide support to clients that counselors are not able to offer. The ICOD Peer Support Specialist/Recovery Mentor works with their supervisor to design and implement recovery support for the ICOD client, ranging from providing on-going support to the client, assisting them with education pursuits, connecting with community support, transportation, and in other ways that as assistive to the client in services. The ICOD Peer Support Specialist/Recovery Mentor is responsible for helping to facilitate classes and support groups along with group activities. They will maintain a personal recovery program, if applicable, as well as model recovery-appropriate behavior.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Participates and provides peer support and recovery coaching to co-occurring disorders clients involved with BestCare Treatment Services using the following methods for engagement with clients:
  2. Makes regular telephone contact which may include talking with clients who need support and are feeling prone to relapse; reminder calls to clients who are scheduled for assessments, groups, individual sessions; doing outreach to client who miss group or individual services to attempt to reengage them in treatment services, including SUD outpatient services and mental health services and/or psychiatry, if applicable;
  3. Provides client transportation (when approved by supervisor): taking clients to/from behavioral health treatment services/appointments, transport to detox or residential treatment, and other appointments when it is determined to be helpful by the primary clinician or treatment team;
  4. Provides peer support and recovery coaching for clients during activities;
  5. Makes home visits on a limited basis, with supervisor approval;
  6. Attend sober support meetings, wellness or other sober activities, in the community with clients.
  7. Helps monitor and stay connected to clients who are in higher levels of care, including SUD residential (and detox) or psychiatric hospitalizations, to help with reengagement upon discharge;
  8. Takes individuals or groups of clients to wellness activities in the community, NAMI, 12-Step meetings and/or clean and sober activities, including Wellbriety/White Bison, as appropriate;
  9. Provides case management services including referrals to various resources (i.e. Food Bank, primary care/medical services, education entities, housing resources, etc.);
  10. Assists prep and clean-up for evening groups as needed;
  11. Provides individual, couples, and family support;
  12. Helping clinicians in groups at the office, jail, etc. Providing back-up in groups and other treatment activities;
  13. Helping clients develop and connect to non-using recovery activities (how to have fun clean and sober) as well as wellness activities that promote mental health.
  14. Maintains case notes of client contact within agency documentation timelines in the electronic health record system (EHR);
  15. Assists the SUD team with UA drug testing if needed;
  16. Completes attendance sheets, required report forms, and reports client participation to Supervisor;
  17. Other related duties as assigned by supervisor or Program Manager.

  5. Maintains professionalism, confidentiality, and compliance with HIPAA, 42 CFR, and Oregon statutes;
  6. Completes assigned training timely and satisfactorily, and attends other seminars, training, and educational opportunities to develop professional skills and abilities;
  7. Ensures that any required certifications and/or licenses are kept current and renewed timely;
  8. Works independently and collaboratively as a positive member of the BestCare team;
  9. Performs other organizational duties as assigned.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma (or equivalent)
  • Must have personal lived experience with Co-Occurring Disorders, to include recovery from substances use and recovery from mental illness.
  • Must have maintained continuous recovery for the previous two (2) years at the time of hire including minimum of 2 years of sobriety/clean time from substance use/addiction and 2 years of mental health stability.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Must have at minimum one or both of the following certifications at the time of hire:
  1. Peer Support Specialist-Traditional Health Worker through the Oregon Health Authority; and/or:
  2. Certified Recovery Mentor-I (CRM) through MHACBO
  • If applicant only possesses one of these certifications at the time of hire, must be eligible to obtain the other certification (CRM or PSS-THW) upon hire.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability and commitment to obtain within 60 days of hiring
  • Must maintain a valid Oregon Driver License or ability to obtain one upon hire, and be insurable under the organization’s auto liability coverage policy (minimum 21 years of age and with no Type A violations in the past 3 years, or three (3) or more Type B violations)

PREFERRED:

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus
  • Previous training, experience, or knowledge of treatment in the disease of addiction is preferred
