Job description

O&M Field Technician
Are you a hands-on professional with a passion for the clean energy transition and deep experience working with complex electrical systems? Do you thrive on high-stakes troubleshooting and take pride in keeping critical infrastructure running at its best?
We are seeking an experienced O&M Field Technician to join the Gridworks team supporting utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) operations across multiple sites. This role is critical to ensuring Gridworks meets its contractual performance obligations on active BESS assets operated on behalf of our clients. The ideal candidate is technically sharp, safety-first, and comfortable working independently across multiple sites with minimal supervision.
About the Company
Established in 2014, Gridworks is a leading EPC contractor for utility-scale solar and battery storage projects. Operating primarily across the Southwest and expanding nationwide, we have completed nearly 3 GW of solar and battery energy storage installations. Gridworks is well-positioned for continued growth in the rapidly expanding clean energy sector.
Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on utility-scale BESS assets, including battery storage containers, power conversion systems (PCS), inverters, and associated electrical equipment.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical faults, BMS alarms, and inverter issues efficiently to minimize system downtime and restore normal operations.
  • Perform routine scheduled maintenance on BESS equipment including balance-of-plant systems, thermal management, electrical connections, and site infrastructure in accordance with OEM guidelines and maintenance schedules.
  • Interface with SCADA and BESS management systems to access operational data, interpret fault codes, and support troubleshooting of equipment issues in the field.
  • Respond to on-call dispatch events for critical and high-priority alarms; triage field-level faults independently and escalate complex issues with thorough written documentation.
  • Communicate with Remote Operations Center (ROC) personnel and utility dispatch to coordinate operations, report system status, and support real-time operational decisions.
  • Execute electrical switching procedures in accordance with approved switching orders; experience with medium-voltage switching operations, including operation of MV disconnects and breakers, required.
  • Coordinate with equipment manufacturers and warranty service teams to support warranty claims and facilitate OEM-level maintenance activities.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, fault records, and corrective action documentation to support operational reporting and performance tracking.
  • Support and coordinate third-party contractors performing work on-site, ensuring activities are completed safely and in accordance with project requirements.
  • Attend OEM and manufacturer training sessions; maintain current knowledge of BESS equipment, safety protocols, and operational best practices.
  • Adhere to all NFPA 70E electrical safety requirements, OSHA standards, and Gridworks safety protocols at all times.
  • Participate in on-call rotation to support emergency response to critical system faults outside normal business hours.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with utility-scale BESS, energy storage systems, or industrial electrical systems preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot power conversion systems (PCS), inverters, and battery management systems (BMS)
  • Electrical safety training consistent with NFPA 70E requirements preferred; ability to work safely on or near energized AC and DC electrical equipment
  • Demonstrated proficiency with lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures for electrical isolation of energized equipment; experience developing and executing equipment-specific LOTO plans preferred
  • Proficiency reading single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, and OEM equipment manuals
  • Experience with SCADA or energy management systems in an operational environment
  • Strong written documentation skills for field logs, maintenance records, and incident reports
  • Previous experience with utility-scale BESS or inverter platforms preferred
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred
  • Ability to obtain and maintain utility site access credentials as required by client sites (background check required)
  • Must have a clean driving record and valid driver's license; reliable daily travel between Albuquerque-area sites required
  • Able to work outdoors in varying temperatures and within confined spaces inside battery containers
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; maneuver equipment up to 100 pounds with assistance
  • Flexibility to participate in on-call rotation for emergency response coverage, including evenings and weekends
  • Ability to pass background check and pre-employment and random drug screenings
  • Willing and able to travel occasionally to support other Gridworks BESS sites as needed (generally less than 15%)
