Summary
The BESS Technician Apprentice is an entry-level Field Operations role designed to develop future utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System technicians for AES Clean Energy. The apprentice works under the direction of qualified technicians and site leadership to learn safe BESS inspection, operation, maintenance, basic troubleshooting, documentation, and site support activities.
This role is intended for candidates who are dependable, safety focsafety-focusedsafety-focusedused, willing to learn, and interested in building a long-term career in renewable energy and battery storage operations.
Apprentice Will Learn
  • Battery Energy Storage System safety, equipment awareness, and safe work practices.
  • Basic electrical fundamentals, inverter/PCS equipment, MV transformers, SCADA systems, and BESS assemblies.
  • How to support inspections, preventive maintenance, alarm response, and troubleshooting equipment under supervision.
  • How to read and follow procedures, OEM manuals, work instructions, drawings, and site documentation.
  • How to complete work orders, inspection forms, maintenance records, and training documentation accurately.

Essential Responsibilities
Safety and Site Conduct
  • Follow AES safety expectations, site procedures, Job Safety Analysis / Job Hazard Analysis requirements, pre-job briefings, and stop-work expectations.
  • Learn and follow Lockout/Tagout and control-of-hazardous-energy practices only under authorized supervision.
  • Use required PPE and maintained awareness of electrical, thermal, environmental, vehicle, heat stress, fall, and equipment hazards.
  • Participate in safety meetings, site orientations, emergency drills, near-miss reporting, and incident prevention activities.
  • Maintain good housekeeping and support a clean, safe, and organized work environment.

BESS Operations and Maintenance Support
  • Assist qualified technicians with preventive and corrective maintenance on utility-scale BESS assets.
  • Support visual inspections of BESS containers/enclosures, racks/modules, battery management systems, PCS/inverter equipment, transformers, switchgear, HVAC/thermal management systems, SCADA, fire detection/suppression interfaces, and balance-of-plant equipment.
  • Assist with basic troubleshooting using approved procedures, OEM manuals, drawings, and technician direction.
  • Support commissioning, seasonal readiness, outage work, equipment inspections, and punch-list closeout as assigned.
  • Promptly communicate abnormal equipment conditions, alarms, leaks, damaged components, communication issues, thermal issues, or safety concerns.

Training, Documentation, and Work Management
  • Complete assigned AES BESS Technical Training Requirements, Workday learning, OEM training, and site-specific qualification requirements.
  • Learn to read single-line diagrams, schematics, equipment manuals, maintenance procedures, and BESS system drawings.
  • Complete work orders, inspection forms, checklists, maintenance records, and field documentation accurately and on time.
  • Use AES systems and tools such as Workday, CMMS/work management systems, mobile devices, Microsoft Office, and site reporting tools assigned.
  • Participate in coaching, mentoring, and competency checks to demonstrate readiness for advancement to BESS Technician I.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate a company vehicle in accordance with AES requirements.
  • Strong interest in renewable energy, battery storage, electrical systems, industrial maintenance, or field operations.
  • Ability to work outdoors in utility-scale environments including heat, cold, wind, dust, and remote site conditions.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds, walk long distances, climb ladders when trained/authorized, and work on uneven terrain.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to complete electronic training, work orders, and reports.
  • Strong communication skills, reliability, teamwork, and willingness to learn under supervision.

  • Ability to follow procedures, directions, and controlled work practices in a power generation environment.

BESS Apprentice Training Focus
Apprentices are expected to complete AES BESS apprentice training requirements and assigned site/OEM learning. The BESS Apprentice training path includes the following focus areas:
  • Electrical Fundamentals
  • Inverter Fundamentals for BESS
  • MV Transformers for BESS
  • SCADA Fundamentals
  • BESS Fundamentals and BESS Safety
  • BESS Assemblies
  • Fluence Gen 5 and Gen 6 case studies
  • SPARK - PV O&M Onboarding
  • Foundations of Battery Energy Storage Systems

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
  • Site-based role working at utility-scale BESS facilities and associated electrical equipment areas.
  • Work may occur around energized electrical equipment, BESS containers/enclosures, moving mechanical equipment, vehicles, heavy equipment, and contractor work areas.
  • Requires outdoor work in desert, rural, and remote environments with high temperature exposure and changing weather conditions.
  • May require overtime, outage support, emergency callout support, and regional travel as business needs require.

The expected salary for this position, at commencement of employment, is between $28.50 and $34.21/per hour; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position also includes annual bonus. The benefits offered for this position are: medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, 401(k) eligibility, and paid time off (including vacation, sick leave time, and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
