Bender Operator information

What is a bender operator?

Bender Operators are skilled workers who operate machines that bend metal or other materials into specific shapes and angles according to blueprints or work orders. They typically work in manufacturing or fabrication settings, ensuring that materials are formed accurately and meet quality standards. Their duties include setting up and adjusting machines, monitoring operations, inspecting finished products, and performing maintenance on equipment. Attention to detail and safety awareness are important aspects of this role.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a bender operator?

To thrive as a Bender Operator, you need mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and experience with metal fabrication processes, often supported by a high school diploma or vocational training. Familiarity with CNC or manual bending machines, blueprint reading, and quality control tools like calipers and gauges is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and a commitment to workplace safety help individuals excel in this role. These abilities ensure precise, efficient production of high-quality parts while maintaining safety and meeting manufacturing standards.

What challenges do bender operators face and how can they be addressed?

Bender Operators often encounter challenges such as maintaining precision and accuracy while working with different types of materials, interpreting complex blueprints, and handling machine malfunctions. To address these, it's important to stay attentive to detail, regularly calibrate equipment, and communicate effectively with team members and supervisors. Continuous training and familiarity with safety protocols also help operators adapt to various production requirements and resolve issues quickly.

What is the difference between Bender Operator vs Pipe Bender?

AspectBender OperatorPipe Bender
CertificationsTypically requires OSHA safety training, machinery operation certificationsSimilar certifications, often including pipe fitting and safety training
Work EnvironmentFactories, manufacturing plants, metal fabrication shopsConstruction sites, manufacturing facilities, pipe installation environments
Job ResponsibilitiesOperating bending machines, ensuring precise bends, inspecting finished productsShaping pipes, bending metal tubes to specifications, maintaining equipment

Both roles involve metal bending and require safety and machinery operation skills. While Bender Operators focus on operating bending machines and inspecting finished parts, Pipe Benders specialize in shaping pipes and tubes for construction or industrial use. The roles often overlap in skills and work environments, but their specific tasks differ based on the materials and end-use applications.

Job description

CNC Mandrel Bender Operator

Company: Stainless Works

Location: Streetsboro, OH

Job Type: Full-Time

Shift: First Shift

About Us

At Stainless Works, we manufacture premium, high-performance exhaust systems and headers right here in the USA. For over 30 years, our passion has been driving performance, precision, and craftsmanship. We pride ourselves on producing American-made products built from high-grade 304 Stainless Steel.

We are looking for an experienced CNC Mandrel Bender Operator to join our production team in Streetsboro. If you take pride in producing clean, wrinkle-free bends on high-end automotive tubing, we want to hear from you!

What You’ll Do

  • Set Up & Operate: Prepare, adjust, and operate Horn Electric CNC Mandrel Benders to bend 1.5" to 3.5" OD 304 Stainless Steel tubing.
  • Tooling & Die Changes: Select, install, and adjust appropriate bend dies, pressure dies, wiper dies, clamp dies, and mandrels based on job specifications.
  • Precision Inspection: Inspect first-article and production bends using check fixtures, calipers, protractors, and height gauges to ensure precise angles, radii, and minimal wall-thinning/ovality.
  • CNC Adjustments: Fine-tune program parameters (springback, boost, pressure die interference, mandrel position) to maintain tight tolerances across various batch sizes.
  • Quality Assurance: Identify and correct common defects such as wrinkling, flattening, or surface scoring on polished/raw stainless tubing.
  • Maintenance & Safety: Perform routine preventive machine maintenance, clean tooling, and maintain a safe, clean work station.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience: 2+ years of setup and operation experience on CNC Rotary Draw / Mandrel Tube Benders. (Direct experience on Horn Electric equipment is a major plus!)
  • Material Knowledge: Demonstrated experience bending thin-to-medium wall 304 Stainless Steel tubing.
  • Size Expertise: Familiarity running tubing ranging from 1.5" up to 3.5" OD.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to read blueprints, work orders, and engineering drawings. Strong understanding of bend offsets, centerline radii (CLR), and rotation/feed values.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and safely maneuver long lengths of tubing.

Why Stainless Works?

  • Competitive Pay: $21-$24 hr Based on experience (Overtime opportunities available).
  • Benefits Package: Health, Dental, Vision, 401(k) with company match, and Paid Time Off (PTO).
  • Great Culture: Work alongside a passionate team of automotive enthusiasts and skilled fabricators in a clean, modern manufacturing environment.
