How to become a behavioral designer?

To become a behavioral designer, develop a strong foundation in psychology, behavioral science, or related fields through a bachelor's or master's degree. Gain skills in research methods, data analysis, and behavioral modeling, and familiarize yourself with tools like behavioral mapping and intervention design. Building experience through projects, internships, or certifications in behavioral science can also enhance your qualifications.

What is the difference between Behavioral Design vs User Experience Designer?

Common Search/ComparisonBehavioral DesignUser Experience Design

Behavioral Design focuses on applying psychological principles to influence user behavior, often through research and behavioral interventions. User Experience Designers concentrate on creating intuitive, engaging interfaces to improve overall user satisfaction. While both roles aim to enhance user interaction, Behavioral Design emphasizes behavior change strategies, whereas UX Design centers on usability and aesthetic appeal.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a behavioral designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Behavioral Designer, you need a solid understanding of psychology, human behavior, and research methodologies, often supported by a degree in psychology, design, or a related field. Familiarity with behavioral science frameworks, user experience (UX) tools, and data analysis platforms is typically required. Strong communication, creative problem-solving, and empathy are crucial soft skills for translating insights into actionable design strategies. These skills and qualifications are essential for creating effective, user-centered interventions that drive positive behavioral change.

How do behavioral design professionals typically collaborate with product teams during the development process?

Behavioral Design professionals work closely with product managers, UX/UI designers, and developers to ensure that psychological insights are integrated into product features. They often participate in brainstorming sessions, user research, and prototype testing to identify opportunities for behavior change. Communication and cross-functional teamwork are essential, as Behavioral Designers translate research findings into actionable design recommendations, helping the team create user experiences that drive desired actions. This collaborative process not only enhances product effectiveness but also fosters a culture of evidence-based decision-making within the organization.

What is behavioral design?

Behavioral design is a field that combines principles from psychology, behavioral economics, and design to create products, services, or environments that positively influence people's decisions and actions. Practitioners study how people actually behave and then use that understanding to design interventions, such as nudges or choice architecture, which help users make better decisions. Behavioral design is commonly applied in areas like health, finance, and technology to encourage desirable behaviors without restricting freedom of choice.

What does a behavioral designer do?

A behavioral designer applies principles from psychology and behavioral science to influence and change people's behaviors through the design of products, services, or environments. They use techniques such as habit formation, nudging, and user research to create interventions that promote desired behaviors, often working with data analysis and user testing tools. This role typically requires strong analytical skills and knowledge of behavioral theories.

Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE

At Rightway, we believe managing your medications should feel simple, personal, and empowering. We're looking for a Senior Product Manager to shape the pharmacy experience our members use every day to take ownership of their medicine cabinet, connect with clinicians and pharmacists, and find the lowest-cost path to healthier lives.

In this role, you'll be the owner of the digital pharmacy journey across our web and mobile apps-from a member's first search for a medication, to choosing where to fill it, to tracking their ongoing prescriptions in a personalized digital medicine cabinet. You'll design experiences that make pharmacy care seamless: clear benefits, easy checkout, timely reminders, and effortless access to retail, mail order, and specialty options.

Your north star: driving member delight, engagement, and outcomes. That means building tools people want to use every day, supporting smarter choices, and creating trust through every interaction.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Own and evolve the vision for Rightway's digital pharmacy experience, keeping members at the center of every product decision.
  • Build intuitive, engaging features-like drug search, cost transparency, benefits clarity, and personalized reminders-that turn complex pharmacy benefits into simple member experiences.
  • Partner closely with design, engineering, and clinical experts to create elegant solutions that balance usability with operational and regulatory needs.
  • Use experimentation, analytics, and member feedback to continually improve adoption, satisfaction, and outcomes.
  • Inspire the team with insights about member behavior and trends in digital health, translating them into actionable roadmaps.
  • Lead and mentor an Associate Product Manager, fostering a culture of creativity, empathy, and data-driven decision making.
  • Stay curious-explore how AI, digital retail, and consumer health innovations can push our member experience forward.

WHO YOU ARE

  • 4+ years of product management experience, ideally blending consumer product and healthcare expertise.
  • Strong track record of shipping B2C experiences that drive engagement and habit formation.
  • Comfortable with experimentation, behavioral design, and data-driven optimization.
  • Excellent communicator and collaborator; able to rally engineers, designers, and clinicians around the member voice.
  • Passionate about building healthcare experiences that are as intuitive and delightful as the best consumer apps.

EXTRA CREDIT

  • Background in digital retail pharmacy or PBM member experiences.
  • Experience with regulated markets (Medicare) or pharmacy data standards.
  • Hands-on exposure to AI-powered product development or prototyping.
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field (MBA, MPH, technical discipline).

COMPENSATION: $146,000 - $200,000 annually, in addition to bonus and equity

Compensation offered will be determined by geographic location, experience, and qualifications.
