POSITION SUMMARY:
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) provides specialized physical therapy services to patients under the supervision and direction of the Physical Therapist. The PTA assists in the supervision and direction of affiliating students. Education of patient's family and other health care team members is provided by the PTA, incorporating health maintenance, disease process, and discharge planning. Also works closely with other rehab staff along with various hospital departments to assure the delivery of quality patient care.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • PTA students from affiliated organizations
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Full range of body motion and dexterity to allow for the significant handling, transferring, pushing/pulling and lifting of patients and equipment.
  • The ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull over 50 pounds.
  • Standing and walking 75% of the time, sitting and kneeling 25% of the time.
  • Eye-hand coordination, finger dexterity, odor, color and texture perception and discrimination, functional visual ability and depth perception, functional sound perception and discrimination, and functional verbal speech ability.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, balancing, and reaching at/or above shoulder level, as well as occasional kneeling and climbing.
  • Ability to wear gloves and other protective equipment.
  • Working irregular hours.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Exposure to disagreeable odors, communicable diseases, and bodily fluids; exposure to the chemical compounds of medications and treatments; exposure to chemicals such as disinfectants, cleansers, soaps, etc.; exposure to latex, plastic, and other materials used for personal protective equipment; exposure to noise and distractions; exposure to unpredictable behaviors.
EQUIPMENT TO BE USED
  • Use equipment such as oxygen delivery systems, Hoyer lifts, EZ Stand and other transfer devices, wheelchairs, hospital beds, all equipment within the department, bed and chair alarms and use of office equipment such as telephone, copy machine, fax, paging system, computer and printer.
SPECIAL SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS: (Subject to modification or accommodation as required)
  • The ability to deal with pressure to meet deadlines, to be accurate, to handle constantly changing situations and to create a positive work environment.
  • The ability to deal with a variety of people, with stressful situations, and handle conflict
  • The ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a professional manner, to gain new skills and knowledge necessary for the performance of essential job functions, and to give, receive, and analyze information.
  • Observes patient's right to confidentiality.
  • Accurate and timely billing for treatments provided.
  • Participate in P.T. departments' in-service training to other departments.
  • Treats patients in a safe environment, where safety precautions and techniques are followed.
  • Operate equipment appropriately and in accordance with operation manuals.
  • Knowledge of facility code system and P.T. department's role during a code or drill.
  • Participate in facility in-services and CQI.
  • Assume responsibility for continuing education and professional development.
  • Knowledge and compliance with infection control and standards for blood borne pathogens.
  • Act as a liaison between patient, family and caregivers.
  • Assumes duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Rehabilitation.

Requirements
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Current Licensure as a Physical Therapist Assistant in the State of Wisconsin or eligibility and evidence of application for licensure.
  • Membership in a professional group or organization is encouraged
  • BLS prior to independent patient care.
