How much do behavior consulting jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for behavior consulting in the United States is $32.13, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $25.96 and $37.26 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges behavior consultants face when working with clients and how can they be addressed?

Behavior consultants often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from clients or stakeholders, difficulties in generalizing positive behaviors across settings, and managing complex cases with multiple underlying issues. Successfully addressing these challenges typically involves building strong rapport and trust, maintaining clear and consistent communication, and using evidence-based strategies tailored to each client's needs. Collaborating closely with families, educators, or other professionals is also key to ensuring that interventions are implemented consistently and effectively.

What is the difference between Behavior Consulting vs Behavior Analysis?

Behavior Consulting and Behavior Analysis share certifications and work environments, but differ mainly in scope. Behavior Consulting emphasizes advising and program development, while Behavior Analysis focuses on assessment and direct intervention. Both roles are vital in behavioral health and education sectors.

What is behavior consulting?

Behavior consulting is a professional service where experts analyze and address behavioral challenges in individuals or groups, often in educational, clinical, or workplace settings. Behavior consultants use principles from psychology and applied behavior analysis (ABA) to assess behaviors, identify triggers, and develop strategies for positive change. They may work with children with developmental disorders, employees facing workplace issues, or organizations aiming to improve overall behavior and performance. The consultant collaborates with clients to implement interventions and monitors progress to ensure effective outcomes. This field requires strong analytical, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Behavior Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Behavior Consultant, you need a strong background in behavioral science, data analysis, and intervention planning, usually supported by a relevant degree and certification such as Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Familiarity with behavioral assessment tools, data collection software, and case management systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills help build trust with clients and collaborate effectively with families and multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for designing effective interventions, tracking progress, and achieving positive outcomes for individuals with behavioral challenges.

Job description

Job Summary

A New Day Services is a women-owned Indiana Medicaid Waiver provider specializing in Behavior Management Services. Our company was founded by active Behavior Consultants who continue to carry their own caseloads—so we truly understand the work and the needs of those providing these services. We’re looking to grow our collaborative team with skilled, passionate Behavior Consultants who want to make a lasting impact while maintaining flexibility and professional independence.

As an Independent Contractor (1099), you’ll have the freedom to create your own schedule, choose your service area, and manage your caseload—without minimum billing requirements. We believe in supporting our consultants, not micromanaging them. You’ll have access to helpful templates, policies, trackers, and consistent training to make documentation and compliance easier.

This role is partly remote: you’ll complete documentation, billing, and planning from home while conducting 1:1 behavior sessions in clients’ homes or in community settings. Reliable transportation is required for travel and occasional client transport.
We offer monthly pay through consistent billing cycles, and your work will be audited quarterly to ensure compliance with state standards.

We have updated all of our policies, procedures, and processes to align with the new BSS Quality Guide and services effective January 1st, 2026.

We are especially interested in adding experienced consultants who want to join a supportive, growth-minded, and organized provider that values both professionalism and work-life balance.

Must reside in Indiana and provide services within your chosen county.

Responsibilities

  • Complete and maintain all state-required documentation: Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs), Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), Quarterly Reports (QRs), and Incident Reports (IRs).
  • Keep documentation organized in the BDS portal and HIPAA-compliant files.
  • Plan and implement recurring 1:1 Behavior Therapy sessions in home or community settings.
  • Attend quarterly team meetings for each client (Q3 required in person; Q1 in person or virtual).
  • Provide training to parents, caregivers, and interdisciplinary team (IST) members on the BSP and other interventions.
  • Collaborate with the IST team to ensure cohesive client care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely direct and indirect billing notes.
  • Manage your own schedule, sessions, and client meetings independently.

Qualifications

Behavioral Consultants providing direct services of Consultation, Functional Behavioral  Assessment and Comprehensive BSS must meet the following criteria: at least a master’s degree in:

  • psychology,
  • social work,
  • behavior analysis,
  • special education,
  • counseling or
  • have a master's degree in a human services field and be able to demonstrate  to the BDS Provider Services that the individual has either coursework in or five (5) years of experience in devising, implementing, and monitoring BSPs.

Why Join A New Day Services

  • Founded by consultants—for consultants
  • Flexible scheduling & caseload control
  • Monthly pay, no billing minimums
  • Supportive tools, templates & training
  • Collaborative, women-owned, values-driven company

This position is ideal for current Behavior Consultants seeking a supportive and flexible provider relationship where their expertise and independence are respected.
