What is a BCBA LBA?

A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) LBA (Licensed Behavior Analyst) is a professional who assesses, designs, and implements behavior intervention plans, primarily for individuals with developmental disabilities, such as autism. They use principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to help improve communication, social skills, and daily living skills. BCBAs often work in schools, clinics, homes, or community settings, collaborating with clients, families, and other professionals. To become a BCBA LBA, one must earn a graduate degree, complete supervised experience, and pass a certification exam. Many states also require licensure, ensuring compliance with state regulations.

What are the typical work settings and team dynamics for a BCBA LBA?

BCBA LBAs can work in a variety of environments, such as clinics, schools, in-home therapy settings, or community programs. The role often involves collaborating closely with registered behavior technicians (RBTs), educators, therapists, and family members to design and oversee individualized behavioral intervention plans. Team structure can vary, but BCBA LBAs typically supervise direct staff and provide ongoing training and support. This collaborative approach ensures that interventions are consistently implemented and allows for adaptability based on client progress and changing needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the BCBA LBA position, and why are they important?

To excel as a BCBA LBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Licensed Behavior Analyst), you need a master's degree in behavior analysis or a related field, current BCBA certification, and state licensure as an LBA. Familiarity with data collection software, electronic health record (EHR) systems, and behavior intervention planning tools is usually required. Strong interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help you effectively collaborate with clients, families, and multidisciplinary teams. These abilities ensure the delivery of ethical, evidence-based services and promote positive outcomes for individuals receiving behavior analytic treatment.

Job description

Children with autism and their families deserve consistent, high-quality support. That's harder to deliver than it sounds, and most BCBAs know exactly why.

At Horizon Blue, we've tried to build a structure that makes it possible. Caseloads of 8 to 10 families. Hours between 15 and 25 per week, with billables that reflect the work you're doing and the growth of the families we serve. Clinical decisions driven by what each child needs, not by pressures that push against good care.

Remote work requires more from a communicator, not less. Parents who never meet you in person need to trust that someone is watching their child's progress closely, adjusting when things aren't working, and reaching out before they have to ask. The BCBAs who do this well are proactive, direct, and treat parent relationships as a core part of the clinical work, not a task on the side.

We support our team through weekly collaboration, clinical mentorship, and involvement in RBT placements. We're a growing team, and we're honest that the opportunity here scales with the work. BCBAs who show up consistently for their families help build something that works for everyone, including themselves.

If that's the kind of work you're looking for, we'd like to hear from you.
