Battery Process Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Battery Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or materials engineering, experience with battery manufacturing processes, and often a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as AutoCAD or MATLAB), Six Sigma methodologies, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are essential to ensure efficient battery production, maintain high quality standards, and drive innovation in the rapidly evolving energy storage industry.

What are some common challenges faced by Battery Process Engineers during scale-up from laboratory to production?

Battery Process Engineers often encounter challenges when translating lab-scale processes to full-scale manufacturing, such as maintaining quality and consistency in large batches, optimizing equipment for high throughput, and ensuring safety protocols with reactive materials. These professionals must troubleshoot unexpected variations, coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams (like R&D, quality assurance, and maintenance), and refine processes to meet both performance and cost goals. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential for overcoming these hurdles and ensuring smooth production ramp-up.

What does a Battery Process Engineer do?

A Battery Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing the manufacturing processes involved in producing batteries, such as lithium-ion cells. They work to improve efficiency, quality, and safety in battery production by developing and refining procedures, selecting appropriate materials, and troubleshooting issues. Additionally, they collaborate with teams across research, development, and manufacturing to scale up new battery technologies from prototype to mass production. Their role is critical for ensuring that batteries meet performance and reliability standards required for various applications, including electric vehicles and consumer electronics.

What is the difference between Battery Process Engineer vs Battery Manufacturing Technician?

AspectBattery Process EngineerBattery Manufacturing Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field; often requires experience in process designHigh school diploma or technical certification; on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesigning, optimizing, and overseeing manufacturing processes in labs or production facilitiesOperating machinery and performing manual tasks on the production line
Industry UsageInvolved in process development, quality control, and process improvementFocuses on assembly, equipment operation, and quality checks

The Battery Process Engineer focuses on designing and improving manufacturing processes, requiring technical expertise and engineering credentials. In contrast, the Battery Manufacturing Technician handles day-to-day production tasks, operating equipment and ensuring product quality. Both roles are essential in battery manufacturing but differ in responsibilities, skills, and work scope.

About Us
Quanta Power Solutions brings together the industry-leading capabilities and resources of Quanta's operating companies to deliver complete EPC solutions. Our integrated approach spans power generation, battery energy storage, renewables, transmission, substation, and underground infrastructure - from concept to commissioning, we execute complex power infrastructure projects with the speed, certainty, and operational excellence our customers depend on.
At Quanta Power Solutions, we are driven by a culture of safety, integrity, and disciplined execution - and we're building a team that shares that commitment.
About this Role
Quanta Power Solutions is seeking an experienced Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer III to support the design, implementation, and optimization of control systems for power generation projects. Based in our Birmingham hub, this role will focus on simple cycle and combined cycle generation, as well as emerging battery energy storage systems, supporting critical infrastructure that meets growing energy demand driven by data centers and industrial load growth.
What You'll Do
  • Design and develop instrumentation and control systems for power generation facilities, including simple and combined cycle plants
  • Create and review engineering deliverables such as P&IDs, control narratives, loop diagrams, and wiring diagrams
  • Specify and select instrumentation, control valves, PLC/DCS systems, and associated hardware
  • Develop and implement control strategies for turbines, balance of plant (BOP) systems, and auxiliary equipment
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, process, and project engineering) to ensure integrated system design
  • Support procurement by preparing technical specifications and evaluating vendor proposals
  • Participate in HAZOPs, SIL assessments, and other safety and risk reviews
  • Provide construction and commissioning support, including system checkout, troubleshooting, and startup activities
  • Ensure compliance with applicable industry codes, standards, and client specifications
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering practices

What You'll Bring
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field
  • 7+ years of experience in instrumentation and controls engineering
  • Hands-on experience with PLC and/or DCS systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Emerson, Honeywell)
  • Strong understanding of industrial control systems, process instrumentation, and automation in power generation environments
  • Experience developing control narratives, logic diagrams, and system architectures
  • Familiarity with industry standards (ISA, IEC, NFPA, etc.)
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting simple cycle and combined cycle power generation projects
  • Background in EPC or design-build project environments
  • Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) integration
  • Functional safety experience (SIL, SIS design)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure
  • Experience supporting commissioning and startup of large-scale power generation facilities

What You'll Get
