Battery Modeling Simulation Engineer information

What is a battery modeling simulation engineer?

A Battery Modeling Simulation Engineer develops and implements mathematical models to simulate battery performance, behavior, and lifespan. They use software tools and simulations to analyze battery efficiency, thermal management, and electrochemical properties. Their work helps optimize battery designs for applications like electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and consumer electronics. This role requires expertise in physics, electrochemistry, and computational modeling to improve battery reliability and performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a battery modeling simulation engineer?

To thrive as a Battery Modeling Simulation Engineer, you should have a solid background in electrochemistry, physics, and computational modeling, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency in simulation tools such as COMSOL, MATLAB, or ANSYS, and familiarity with battery management systems and data analysis software, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective collaboration and communication abilities are highly valued in this role. These competencies are crucial for accurately modeling battery behaviors, identifying performance improvements, and working efficiently with multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by battery modeling simulation engineers, and how are they addressed?

Battery Modeling Simulation Engineers often work with complex, evolving battery technologies and must accurately simulate real-world behaviors—challenges that require staying up-to-date with the latest research and adapting models accordingly. They may encounter difficulties with unavailable or incomplete data, thermal management, and integrating simulation results into practical applications. To overcome these challenges, engineers collaborate closely with chemists, experimentalists, and software developers, regularly validate models with lab results, and participate in continuous learning through workshops or trainings. This dynamic environment encourages innovative problem-solving and provides valuable professional growth opportunities.

Job description

MTSI is seeking to hire a motivated engineer with 5-10 years of experience in modeling & simulation, particularly with AFSIM or similar mission-level frameworks. The candidate will support a team delivering high-fidelity modeling, simulation, and analytical products of kinetic weapon system concepts for the Missile Defense Agency. This role offers the opportunity to work on high visibility, cutting-edge missile system programs and contribute to innovative solutions for national defense.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Support mission-level modeling and simulation of weapon systems using AFSIM and related tools.
  • Develop and maintain C++ models for fire control, engagement kinematics, and missile system performance.
  • Conduct performance analysis and scenario-based simulations to evaluate GNC and fire control effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with GNC engineers to integrate models, run large-scale simulations, and analyze results for missile and kinetic weapon concepts.
  • Develop analytical products, technical reports, briefings, and visualizations to support DoD program decisions.
  • Contribute to ongoing modeling and simulation efforts, including tool enhancement and scenario development.

Qualifications:
  • U.S. Citizenship required (and ability to obtain security clearance).
  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (MS preferred).
  • 5-10 years of experience in modeling & simulation, preferably with AFSIM or other mission-level frameworks.
  • Strong software development skills with solid understanding of object-oriented programming principles in C++.
  • Experience developing, modifying, and debugging complex simulation models in C++.
  • Familiarity with 6-DOF simulations, fire control systems, engagement modeling, or GNC concepts.
  • Proficiency with modeling and simulation tools such as AFSIM, MATLAB, and Python.
  • Ability to perform detailed system-level performance analysis and support requirements development.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
