What is an AFSIM engineer?

An AFSIM Engineer is a specialist who works with the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling (AFSIM) software. They are responsible for developing, integrating, and analyzing complex simulations, often for defense or aerospace applications. Their work involves modeling systems, running performance assessments, and supporting decision-making with simulation data. AFSIM Engineers typically have backgrounds in engineering, computer science, or physics, and experience with scripting or programming is often required.

What are some common challenges faced by an AFSIM engineer when integrating new simulation models into existing frameworks?

AFSIM Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new models, such as ensuring compatibility with existing simulation architectures and maintaining data integrity across various components. Balancing the fidelity of simulations with computational efficiency can also be demanding, especially when working with large-scale or complex scenarios. Additionally, effective communication with multidisciplinary teams—like software developers, analysts, and subject matter experts—is essential to align requirements and resolve integration issues promptly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AFSIM engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AFSIM Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering, simulation modeling, and programming, typically supported by a degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency with the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration and Modeling (AFSIM), scripting languages (such as Lua or Python), and experience with modeling tools are essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set top performers apart. These competencies ensure accurate simulation results, effective collaboration, and the ability to meet complex defense or aerospace modeling needs.

How much does an Afsim Engineer make?

An Afsim Engineer's salary typically ranges from $80,000 to $120,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Professionals with specialized skills in simulation software and certifications may earn higher compensation.

Job description

MTSI is seeking a skilled AFSIM (Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling) Developer/Analyst to design, implement, and analyze mission-level simulations supporting advanced DoD systems and CONOPS development. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience extending AFSIM through scenario scripting, high-fidelity subsystem modeling, analytic workflows, and C++ plugin development. This role involves building and integrating complex models for sensors, weapons, communications, and decision logic into scalable simulation architectures to evaluate system performance and mission effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Architect, develop, and maintain AFSIM models, plugins, and simulation components to support advanced mission-level analyses.
  • Develop custom AFSIM behaviors, algorithms, and decision models (tasking logic, autonomy, federated multi-domain behaviors, etc.).
  • Integrate external data sources (threat models, performance data, signatures, environmental models) to improve simulation fidelity.
  • Analyze simulation results and extract actionable insights and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with engineers, analysts, and subject matter experts to define simulation requirements and scenarios.
  • Integrate new capabilities, algorithms, and data into AFSIM models to enhance simulation fidelity.
  • Document simulation processes, methodologies, and results in technical reports and presentations.
  • Support briefings and discussions with customers and stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications:
  • US citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance (if not already held)
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or related field.
  • 3+ years hands-on experience developing AFSIM models, scenarios, and plugins.
  • Familiarity with modeling and simulation principles including discrete-event simulation, stochastic modeling, Monte Carlo techniques, and scenario-based experimentation.
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as C++, Python, or similar.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in a technical field.
  • Experience modeling military platforms, RF systems, weapons, C2 networks, orbital mechanics, or EW effects.
  • Familiarity with other simulation tools or frameworks (e.g., MATLAB, STK, or similar).
  • Knowledge of data visualization and analysis tools.

Why Join Us?
  • Work on cutting-edge technologies and contribute to mission-critical projects.
  • Join a collaborative, high-performing team of engineers and analysts.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package.
