What are some common challenges Battery Engineers face when developing new battery technologies?

Battery Engineers often encounter challenges related to balancing energy density, safety, and cost when designing new battery technologies. Achieving higher performance without compromising the lifespan or safety of the battery is a complex task that requires extensive testing and collaboration with materials scientists, electrical engineers, and manufacturing teams. Additionally, staying current with evolving industry standards and environmental regulations is crucial. These challenges make adaptability, teamwork, and problem-solving essential skills for success in this field.

What are Battery Engineers?

Battery Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and improve batteries and energy storage systems. They work on creating more efficient, reliable, and safe batteries for a variety of applications, including electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and renewable energy systems. Their responsibilities often include materials research, prototype development, performance testing, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. Battery Engineers collaborate with other engineers and scientists to push the boundaries of battery technology and contribute to advancements in energy storage.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Battery Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Engineer, you need a solid background in electrochemistry, materials science, and electrical engineering, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with battery management systems (BMS), simulation software (such as COMSOL or MATLAB), and safety certification standards is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this field. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing safe, efficient, and innovative battery technologies that meet industry demands.

What Does a Battery Engineer Do?

As a battery engineer, you work in power technology to design batteries of all types—common types include Alkaline and Lithium-ion batteries. Your job is to create an energy cell system using a cathode, anode, and electrode in various designs. Other duties include electrochemical cell fabrication, researching innovative energy materials, and working with lab technicians to complete projects. A battery engineer may also participate in ongoing research projects, helping create the energy sources of tomorrow.

What is the difference between Battery Engineer vs Battery Technician?

  • Act in a supporting role to Rivian’s HV Battery Product Development team through supplier battery pack development and launch, and then become the Rivian Design Lead when the program moves from Product Development to the Product Excellence Team for sustaining engineering activity in the series production phase.
  • Take design lead responsibility during the sustaining engineering phase for technical coordination and management of supplier changes to ensure data based alignment and approval across the supplier and Rivian, including SW, Reliability, and Validation
  • Provide technical support for any supplier remanufacturing processes to ensure design performance is maintained.
  • Drive external suppliers to thoroughly analyze and resolve field service issues to improve Rivian’s vehicle production and customer experience.

Qualifications
  • 3+ years of work experience in Battery/Automotive/Aerospace/related industries with a bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline at minimum.
  • Previous experience with product launches, production schedules, and release engineering (including CAD design, GD&T, and PLM interface).
  • Strong communication, multitasking, and interpersonal skills, both in presentation and technical writing.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a focus on core engineering principles.
  • Mechanical engineering experience required, electronics / controls experience a plus.
  • Passion for working on products that involve the intersection of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering.
  • Willingness to expand upon the existing knowledge base of electro-mechanical systems.
  • Self-starter, must be willing to run to and seek out issues and related details, including travel to customer and Rivian sites when needed.
  • Passion for testing and teardowns to find the root cause of an issue.
  • Knowledge of battery behavior and high voltage safety.
  • Experience with issue tracking and collaboration tools (Jira, Trello, Gitlab, Asana, Confluence, etc.).
  • Proficiency using CAN/Ethernet tools for debugging purposes is a plus.
  • Background with CATIA V6 (3Dx) CAD Design and Enovia is a plus.
