How much do battery cell engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 27, 2026, the average yearly pay for battery cell engineer in Oregon is $122,030.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $100,400.00 and $137,400.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Battery Cell Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Cell Engineer, you need a solid background in electrochemistry, materials science, and engineering principles, typically supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in chemical, materials, or electrical engineering. Experience with laboratory equipment, battery modeling software, and knowledge of industry standards like ISO and IEC, as well as certifications such as Six Sigma or PMP, are valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills set exceptional engineers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for designing safe, high-performance batteries and driving innovation in energy storage technologies.

What are some typical challenges Battery Cell Engineers face when scaling up from prototype to mass production?

Battery Cell Engineers often encounter challenges when transitioning from prototype development to mass production, such as ensuring consistency in cell performance across large batches, managing supply chain variability, and addressing new quality control issues that arise at scale. They must work closely with manufacturing, quality assurance, and procurement teams to troubleshoot production bottlenecks and maintain strict safety standards. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as the role requires both hands-on technical work and cross-functional collaboration to achieve reliable, high-volume output.

What does a Battery Cell Engineer do?

A Battery Cell Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing battery cells used in a variety of applications such as electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and renewable energy storage. They work on improving battery performance, safety, and lifespan by selecting materials, optimizing cell architecture, and overseeing manufacturing processes. Battery Cell Engineers collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that battery systems meet both technical and regulatory requirements.

What is the difference between Battery Cell Engineer vs Battery Pack Engineer?

AspectBattery Cell EngineerBattery Pack Engineer
ResponsibilitiesDesigns and develops individual battery cells, focusing on chemistry, materials, and performanceDesigns and integrates multiple cells into battery packs, focusing on system integration, safety, and thermal management
Required SkillsElectrochemistry, materials science, cell testingElectrical engineering, system integration, thermal management
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, R&D centersManufacturing facilities, vehicle integration sites
Industry UsageAutomotive, consumer electronics, energy storageElectric vehicles, energy storage systems, industrial applications

While both roles focus on batteries, the Battery Cell Engineer specializes in developing individual cells, whereas the Battery Pack Engineer works on assembling and optimizing multiple cells into complete battery systems. Both roles require knowledge of battery technology but differ in scope and focus.
