As of Jun 5, 2026, the average hourly pay for battery anode in the United States is $21.66, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.87 and $21.15 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Battery Anode vs Battery Cathode?

AspectBattery AnodeBattery Cathode
RoleStores and releases electrons during charging and dischargingAccepts electrons during discharge, completing the circuit
MaterialsTypically graphite, silicon, or lithium compoundsCobalt, nickel, manganese oxides
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, manufacturing plants, R&D facilitiesSimilar to anode roles, often in same facilities
CertificationsElectrical engineering, materials scienceElectrical engineering, materials science

Battery anodes and cathodes are essential components of rechargeable batteries, working together to store and release energy. The anode is the negative electrode that releases electrons, while the cathode is the positive electrode that accepts electrons. Both roles require similar materials, certifications, and work environments, but they perform different functions within the battery. Understanding these differences helps in selecting the right job focus in battery manufacturing and research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Battery Anode Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Anode Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, electrochemistry, and engineering, usually supported by a relevant degree such as chemical engineering or materials science. Familiarity with laboratory analysis tools, battery testing equipment, and software for data modeling and simulation is typically required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help individuals excel in cross-disciplinary teams and drive innovation. These skills and qualities are crucial for advancing battery technology, optimizing performance, and ensuring safety in energy storage solutions.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Battery Anode Engineer in a manufacturing environment?

A Battery Anode Engineer typically focuses on developing, testing, and optimizing anode materials for lithium-ion or next-generation batteries. Daily tasks often include designing experiments, analyzing performance data, and collaborating with research scientists and production teams to improve anode efficiency and safety. Engineers may also troubleshoot issues in pilot or mass production and ensure that the materials meet quality and safety standards. Close teamwork with other battery component specialists and regular reporting on findings are common aspects of the role.

What are battery anodes?

Battery anodes are one of the two electrodes in a battery, typically serving as the negative terminal during discharge. They are crucial for storing and releasing electrons during the battery's operation, enabling the flow of electric current. In lithium-ion batteries, common anode materials include graphite and, increasingly, silicon or other composites to improve performance. The choice of anode material directly impacts the battery's capacity, lifespan, and charging speed.

Job description

What role you will play in our team

Battery Anode Materials Engineer / Scientist / Product Developer for leading synthetic graphite grade development and delivering advantaged products with differentiated performance in lithium ion battery cells. The role will work closely with other functions (marketing, sales and innovation group) and will maintain continual open/working interfaces with Customer and Application Developers, Process Technologists and Researchers in the development of these materials. Scope of effort covers initial benchtop/laboratory scale work as well as pilot and commercial operations. Candidate will be responsible for product design & quality starting from ExxonMobil initial development and production and continuing to customer processing and application fit-for-use.

What you will do
  • Identify and implement new battery anode material grade opportunities by Incorporating market-back needs / concepts in combination with developing innovative technical approaches.
  • Drive product development workflows at lab and pilot scales for internal and customer testing needs. Scope includes prototypes, validation, and scale-up.
  • Identify/implement new equipment and analytical capabilities as required
  • Provide technical leadership to define product research needs and participate in quality assurance for research and research applications.
  • Lead product interface for synthetic graphite process development teams at lab, pilot unit and commercial scale.
  • Own product specs and processing / performance fit-for-use in battery assembly & testing
  • Continue to identify / implement technical capabilities to maintain competitive advantage
  • Actively contribute content to IP development
About you

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S., preferably, M.S. or Ph.D. in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering.
  • 5+ years experience in industry focused battery anode material development and production
  • Experience with battery cell manufacture and testing a plus

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

  • Battery anode material product design - impacts of product attributes such as particle size,  particle size distribution, surface area, shape, structure, impurities on battery performance
  • Battery anode material fabrication and characterization: hands-on experience with milling/shaping technology to prepare developmental samples as well as experience with conventional carbon powder characterization techniques (density, surface areas, SEM. ICP, XRD, etc) for both precursor cokes and subsequent graphite battery anode material
  • Familiarity with grinding/milling operations at scales ranging from lab to commercial and subsequent heat treatment steps necessary for the production of graphite
  • Managing multiple interfaces in development, ability to connect key factors across the value chain from coke to final lithium ion battery application performance and incorporate feedback into product design
