How much do battery anode jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average hourly pay for battery anode in the United States is $21.66, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.87 and $21.15 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Battery Anode vs Battery Cathode?

AspectBattery AnodeBattery Cathode
RoleStores and releases electrons during charging and dischargingAccepts electrons during discharge, completing the circuit
MaterialsTypically graphite, silicon, or lithium compoundsCobalt, nickel, manganese oxides
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, manufacturing plants, R&D facilitiesSimilar to anode roles, often in same facilities
CertificationsElectrical engineering, materials scienceElectrical engineering, materials science

Battery anodes and cathodes are essential components of rechargeable batteries, working together to store and release energy. The anode is the negative electrode that releases electrons, while the cathode is the positive electrode that accepts electrons. Both roles require similar materials, certifications, and work environments, but they perform different functions within the battery. Understanding these differences helps in selecting the right job focus in battery manufacturing and research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Battery Anode Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Anode Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, electrochemistry, and engineering, usually supported by a relevant degree such as chemical engineering or materials science. Familiarity with laboratory analysis tools, battery testing equipment, and software for data modeling and simulation is typically required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help individuals excel in cross-disciplinary teams and drive innovation. These skills and qualities are crucial for advancing battery technology, optimizing performance, and ensuring safety in energy storage solutions.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Battery Anode Engineer in a manufacturing environment?

A Battery Anode Engineer typically focuses on developing, testing, and optimizing anode materials for lithium-ion or next-generation batteries. Daily tasks often include designing experiments, analyzing performance data, and collaborating with research scientists and production teams to improve anode efficiency and safety. Engineers may also troubleshoot issues in pilot or mass production and ensure that the materials meet quality and safety standards. Close teamwork with other battery component specialists and regular reporting on findings are common aspects of the role.

What are battery anodes?

Battery anodes are one of the two electrodes in a battery, typically serving as the negative terminal during discharge. They are crucial for storing and releasing electrons during the battery's operation, enabling the flow of electric current. In lithium-ion batteries, common anode materials include graphite and, increasingly, silicon or other composites to improve performance. The choice of anode material directly impacts the battery's capacity, lifespan, and charging speed.

Job description

Who You Are

As a Battery Cell Engineer on the Battery Performance team, you will leverage your expertise to design cutting-edge batteries featuring Sila's next-generation anode material for a variety of customer applications. You possess demonstrated hands-on expertise in the comprehensive performance evaluation of battery components (including electrolytes, anodes, cathodes, foils, and separators) and have a proven ability to integrate novel components and innovations to optimize GED, cycle life, and safety tradeoffs. Your proficiency extends to supporting stacked pouch and cylindrical prototype builds, conducting thorough failure analysis, and leveraging advanced data analysis, statistical methods, and modeling to inform design iterations and solve complex challenges.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Develop and execute comprehensive test plans for multilayer and cylindrical cells, from initial novel component integration and validation through full cell qualification, ensuring rigorous data collection for analysis.
  • Apply advanced data analysis, statistical methods, and modeling techniques to interpret test results, predict performance, and inform design iterations.
  • Perform thorough failure analysis on prototype cells and customer qualification units to identify root causes.
  • Support the successful execution of internal and external development programs by designing and refining cell prototyping processes.
  • Champion our company's vision to actively develop and integrate novel testing capabilities and methodologies at the material, electrode, and cell levels to enhance performance evaluation and accelerate learning cycles.
  • Effectively communicate complex ideas, strategic plans, and critical results externally to partners and internally across Sila's diverse teams.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
  • Solid understanding of battery performance and failure mechanisms, including electrolyte degradation, material and cell-level swell, and Li plating.
  • Solid experience with characterization and integration of novel battery components.
  • Experience with data and modeling.
  • Experience with cell prototyping.
  • Ability to carefully plan and implement multiple projects simultaneously
  • B.S. in engineering or science and 8+ years of experience (fewer for candidates with an advanced degree), or related experience.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment, such as a laptop, copier/printer, etc in a fixed location
  • Move long distances (such as from building to building) and be stationary for extended periods of time
  • (As needed) Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear respiratory protection

The starting base pay for this role is between $151,000 and $191,000 at the time of posting. The actual base pay depends on many factors, such as education, experience, and skills. Base pay is only one part of Sila's competitive Total Rewards package that can include benefits, perks, and equity.  The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. #LI-Onsite #LI-PL1
