Job description

Description
The Mechanical Designer will design and develop hardware and enclosures used in generator protection, regulation, and control systems, as well as related equipment. The task level will range from average to difficult. Good judgment is required for resolving problems and making recommendations. The designer is responsible for the documentation of components and assemblies as well as related part lists. The designer will also be responsible for assistance with pre-production build and testing of products. Will interact with product development teams to produce prototypes and facilitate manufacturing.
Reports to: Mechanical Engineering Manager or Electrical Engineering Systems Design Manager
Essential Duties
  • Create mechanical packaging or electromechanical three-dimensional solid models and two-dimensional drawings for multiple product lines. This documentation includes but is not limited to component drawings, assembly drawings, exploded views, schematics, tool/fixture drawings, customer drawings, and Quality System documents.
  • Transform preliminary product designs or sketches into working models and documents.
  • Apply DFMA concepts in developing designs.
  • Perform tolerance analyses and validation.
  • Check dimensions of parts, material types, component fit-ups, and assembly completeness.
  • Utilize knowledge of various machines, engineering practices, mathematics, materials, and other physical sciences to complete drawings.
  • Modify existing product documentation per the Engineering Change Order (ECO) procedure.
  • Process and coordinate Engineering Change Orders in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with engineers to determine the root cause and resolution for component/product issues.
  • Create and maintain accurate bills of material in the JD Edwards MRP system.
  • Assist in component selection when required.
  • Develop and obtain prototype parts for testing and pre-production activities.
  • Participate in design review activities. Critique designs for safety, manufacturability, failure modes, customer usage, and function.
  • Establish component tolerances in accordance with manufacturing capabilities.
  • Ensure drawings and designs adhere to established drafting specifications and standards.
  • Maintain relationships of models and drawing files in an organized fashion.
  • Understand and practice the company quality procedures.
  • Travel as required for training, project support, product issues, or other design- or job-related needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • Associate's degree in Mechanical Drafting or equivalent and two to four years' related experience or training.
  • One to three years of mechanical design experience including 3D CAD and 2D CAD is preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.
  • Experience with CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret Engineering assembly drawings, specifications, sketches, and notes.
  • Basic understanding of PCB design and layout tools and/or processes is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of electrical/circuit design is preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Experience with sheet metal manufacturing processes, machining and printed circuit boards preferred.
  • Experience with MRP/ERP systems preferred.

Compensation
We anticipate filling the Mechanical Designer position with an expected compensation range of $60,000 - $70,500. We are open to reviewing additional candidates with more or less experience and the pay range may differ if filled at a different level. Our pay ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location. Starting pay and job title are based on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills.
