Job description

The MacColl YMCA and Pawtucket YMCA based in RI are seeking dynamic and engaging Basketball Instructors to lead youth and teen basketball sessions while also supporting pre-school programming. This role is responsible for delivering high-quality, age-appropriate basketball instruction, while creating a positive, safe, and inclusive environment for all participants.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to coach and develop players ages 6โ€“teen, while also following established pre-school curriculums (ages 2โ€“5) to help create a fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate experience for younger participants.

Essential Functions:

ย  Lead and instruct basketball sessions for youth and teen participants, focusing on skill development, game understanding, and enjoyment of the sport.

ย  Support and deliver pre-school basketball sessions by following established curriculums designed to promote fundamental movement, coordination, and early skill development.

ย  Supervise groups of children and teens, ensuring a safe, structured, and positive environment at all times.

ย  Follow all YMCA policies, procedures, and standards, including safety protocols, behavior guidance strategies, and child abuse prevention policies; make ADA accommodations where appropriate.

ย  Plan and deliver sessions that are developmentally appropriate, engaging, and aligned with YMCA values, with a focus on character development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

ย  Build positive relationships with participants by modeling strong communication and leadership skills.

ย  Create opportunities for participants to build confidence, problem-solve, and actively engage in sessions.

ย  Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding participant progress and program details.

ย  Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and program events as required.

ย  Assist with equipment setup, breakdown, and overall program organization.

  • High school diploma or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
  • Meets minimum age standards as established by state law and/or the Y.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required.
  • Child Abuse Prevention training required within 30 days of hire.
  • Previous experience working with children preferred.
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Ability to understand and comply with YMCA Child Abuse Prevention policies.
  • Completion of criminal background check and screening in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Completion of required Child Abuse Prevention training prior to and throughout employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with youth.
