Job description

Senior Marketer - Southern California (based in Long Beach)
Location: Long Beach, CA
Sports Basement is growing in Southern California, and we're looking for a Senior Marketer to lead community-based marketing across our SoCal stores - driving awareness, building community connections, and bringing new customers through the doors.
This role is about building demand region-wide: embedding Sports Basement into our SoCal communities through partnerships, events, and local storytelling that drive real traffic, real loyalty, and real impact. It's equal parts community builder, event operator, team leader, and strategic marketer.
Salary: $70,500-$90,000, exempt position. Specific starting wages are dependent on location and experience.
The Role
The Senior Marketer owns community-based marketing for the Southern California region and leads the SoCal marketing team, with Long Beach as the home base. You'll help shape Sports Basement's regional marketing strategy as we expand, working closely with the Sr. Director of Marketing and the regional Store GMs to drive in-store traffic, partnerships, and brand presence - locally and beyond.
This is a hands-on, high-visibility role with real ownership and room to build.
What You'll Do
  • Drive in-store traffic across the SoCal region through community outreach, partnerships, and field marketing
  • Leverage AI tools to research, identify, and proactively engage potential community, nonprofit, school, club, corporate, and tourism partners - expanding Sports Basement's reach and uncovering high-impact opportunities at scale
  • Identify, develop, and manage regional partnerships with schools, nonprofits, clubs, leagues, and corporate partners
  • Own large-scale regional events with company-wide impact
  • Develop and host high-quality in-store events that showcase Sports Basement as "so much more than retail"
  • Extend and refine Sports Basement's Basementeer loyalty and community giving program at a regional level
  • Supervise and mentor the Marketers and Assistant Marketers across the SoCal stores
  • Represent Sports Basement at community events and continuously seek new growth opportunities
  • Contribute engaging content for local and regional social media
  • Support marketing efforts that attract tourists and destination shoppers
  • Balance creativity with business discipline - tracking ROI, impact, and learnings

What Success Looks Like
  • Strong, sustainable partnerships that drive measurable traffic across the region
  • Well-executed events that feel authentic, energetic, and on-brand
  • A visible, respected Sports Basement presence throughout the Southern California community
  • Programs that scale beyond one store and influence the broader company
  • A SoCal marketing team that's developing, aligned, and executing at a high level

Who You Are
  • A proven relationship-builder who opens doors and creates win-win partnerships
  • Strategic and analytical, with experience developing high-ROI programs
  • An excellent communicator - written, verbal, and in person
  • A confident event leader with strong logistics and execution skills
  • Warm, genuine, professional, and fun - you embody the Sports Basement brand
  • A natural mentor and leader who develops the people around you
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable juggling multiple priorities
  • Passionate about outdoor recreation, wellness, and community

Requirements
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Self-starter with high ownership and follow-through
  • Comfortable working on the sales floor and in the field
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and the busy winter season (Thanksgiving-mid-January)
  • Solid analytical skills and understanding of retail financial metrics
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and CRM tools
  • Access to a car and willingness to travel between SoCal stores
  • Joyful, engaging energy (yes - this matters here)

How to Apply
Please include a cover letter answering the following:
  1. Why do you want to work in Sports Basement's Marketing Department, and why are you a good fit for this role?
  2. What stands out most about our stores, and how would you communicate that to others?
  3. How would you drive the biggest impact across our Southern California stores?

About Sports Basement
Since 1998, Sports Basement has been more than a sporting goods store - we're a community hub offering the best brands at Basement prices, with giving back baked into our DNA. What started as a weekend-only shop in a San Francisco warehouse has grown into multiple fully stocked Bay Area locations, several newly opened Southern California stores, in-house snow and bike shops, a thriving rentals program, and a robust ecommerce website at sportsbasement.com. We've come a long way, and we couldn't be prouder of the company we've become.
Our Mission
We're here to help our communities shine a little brighter, live a little greener, and make the outdoors more fun and accessible for everyone. Because your gear is more than just stuff, and we're more than just a store.
Our Core Values
A lot of companies say they care about customers, community, and the environment. We do too - but what sets us apart is how we actually live those values every day. A few principles that guide us:
  • Couches before profit
  • Economical vs. Extravagant
  • Volunteer vs. Donate
  • Proximity vs Productivity
  • O.K. is not O.K.
  • Doers vs. Degrees
  • Creativity before efficiency
  • Autonomy before rules
  • YES! vs. NO
  • Safety before speed

Benefits
  • Sports Basement offers competitive wages with real opportunities for advancement. Starting pay varies by location and experience - but the perks go well beyond the paycheck:
  • Full health, dental, and vision coverage (full-time staff)
  • Profit-sharing bonus pool
  • 40% off our already low prices - for life (after 2,000 hours worked)
  • A fully stocked kitchen with free breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner
  • A free flight for every year-equivalent of hours worked
  • Free skiing, camping, and biking trips through our Out of the Basement program
  • Free use of rental gear
  • 40% reimbursement on out-of-pocket costs for individual sports activities
  • 401(k) plan
  • Company ESOP retirement program
  • Flexible scheduling for students
