How much do barge welding jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for barge welding in the United States is $29.79, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.32 and $34.13 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common safety challenges faced by barge welders, and how are they addressed on the job?

Barge welders often work in challenging environments, including confined spaces and over water, which increases the risk of accidents such as electrical hazards, burns, or exposure to fumes. To address these risks, employers typically provide comprehensive safety training, require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like helmets and respirators, and enforce strict safety protocols. Regular safety meetings and inspections are also standard to ensure compliance. As a barge welder, being vigilant and adhering to these guidelines is crucial for maintaining a safe work environment and preventing injuries.

What is barge welding?

Barge welding is a specialized welding process used to repair or construct metal structures on barges, which are flat-bottomed boats used for transportation or construction on water. It often involves underwater or marine welding techniques, requiring certifications such as underwater welding training and knowledge of marine environments. Skilled welders use tools like arc or MIG welders in challenging conditions to ensure the integrity of the vessel's structure.

Can you make $300,000 as a welder?

Barge welders can potentially earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, specialized skills, and working in high-demand environments such as offshore or industrial settings. However, such high earnings are typically achieved through overtime, hazardous duty pay, and working in remote locations, and are not typical for all welders. Most welders earn between $40,000 and $70,000 per year, with top earners reaching higher salaries based on certifications and expertise.

Can you make $100,000 as a welder?

Barge welders can potentially earn $100,000 or more annually, especially with experience, specialized skills, and working in high-demand environments such as offshore or industrial settings. Achieving this income level often requires certifications, overtime, and working in remote or challenging conditions. Salary varies based on location, employer, and the complexity of the welding tasks performed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Barge Welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Barge Welder, you need expertise in welding techniques, blueprint reading, and metal fabrication, typically backed by a high school diploma or GED and welding certifications like AWS or ABS. Familiarity with welding equipment, safety gear, and systems such as MIG, TIG, and Stick welding is essential. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help ensure safe, high-quality work in challenging marine environments. These skills are vital for maintaining structural integrity and safety standards on barges operating under demanding conditions.

However, Barge Welders focus on welding floating structures on water, while Shipyard Welders work primarily on ships and large vessels in shipyards. Understanding these differences helps job seekers target the right roles in the maritime industry.

What welding jobs pay $50 an hour?

Barge welders and other specialized welding roles can earn $50 an hour or more, especially with experience, certifications, and in high-demand environments like maritime or industrial settings. Skilled welders using techniques such as underwater welding or pipe welding often command higher wages due to the complexity and risks involved.
