What is a Barber Internship job?

A Barber Internship is a hands-on training program where aspiring barbers gain real-world experience under the supervision of licensed professionals. Interns learn techniques such as haircutting, shaving, styling, and customer service while working in a barbershop setting. It provides valuable exposure to the industry, helping interns refine their skills and build confidence. Many internships also include guidance on sanitation, shop management, and client communication. This experience is essential for meeting licensing requirements and preparing for a professional barbering career.

Can you make money as a barber apprentice?

Yes, barber apprentices can earn money through paid apprenticeships or part-time work while learning the trade. The amount earned varies depending on the employer, location, and whether the apprentice is paid hourly or through commissions, but earning income during training is common in many programs.

Can a barber make $100,000 a year?

Barbers can potentially earn $100,000 annually, especially with experience, a strong client base, and additional income from tips or offering specialized services. However, reaching this level typically requires working in high-income areas, building a reputation, and sometimes owning a shop or booth rental. Most barbers earn less than this, but top earners can approach or exceed six figures with the right circumstances.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Barber Internship position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Barber Internship, you should have a basic understanding of hair cutting, styling, and grooming techniques, often gained through cosmetology school or a barber training program. Familiarity with barbering tools such as clippers, scissors, razors, and sanitation equipment is expected, and some states may require a trainee or apprentice permit. Strong interpersonal skills, a willingness to learn, attention to detail, and professionalism help interns build client trust and succeed in a team setting. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering quality service, maintaining hygiene standards, and developing a loyal clientele in a competitive industry.

What can I expect from the training and mentorship during a Barber Internship?

During a Barber Internship, you will typically work closely with experienced barbers who provide hands-on guidance and feedback as you develop your technical skills and customer service abilities. Many shops or salons offer structured training that covers cutting techniques, sanitation practices, and industry best practices, allowing interns to gradually take on more client-facing responsibilities. You can expect to start by observing tasks and assisting with basic duties, then move on to providing supervised haircuts and shaves. This supportive environment is designed to help you gain confidence, improve your skills, and prepare for potential full-time opportunities after your internship.

Do trainee barbers get paid?

Trainee barbers often receive a stipend or hourly wage during their internship, but payment policies vary by employer and program. Some internships are unpaid and focus on skill development, while others offer compensation as part of the training process. It is important to clarify payment terms before starting a barber internship.

How to get into barbering with no experience?

To start a barber internship with no experience, focus on developing basic grooming skills and learning about haircutting tools. Many programs accept beginners and provide on-the-job training, often requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. Completing a barbering course and obtaining a license are typically necessary to advance in the field.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
