The Acute Care Phlebotomist works in high-paced hospital environments, emergency departments, or ICU settings to collect blood samples from critically ill or hospitalized patients. Key responsibilities include proficient venipuncture, accurate specimen labeling, patient identification, and processing, while ensuring strict adherence to infection control and safety protocols

Minimum Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent Required


Minimum Work Experience

  • 1 year Phlebotomy experience Preferred


  • Performs phlebotomy procedures according to established policies and procedures.
  • Organizes assigned work and ensures the workload is completed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Maintains high specimen quality.
  • Operates assigned equipment, performs any required maintenance and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.
  • Cross-trained in all areas. Trains new team members on all technology relevant to their area. Helps team members when needed to ensure an orderly workflow.
  • Performs venipunctures and capillary draws on adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients, including those with difficult veins.
  • Verifies patient identity and ensure accuracy in labeling to prevent mislabeling.
  • Maintains a sterile work environment and follow infection control protocols.
  • Utilizes Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) or Electronic Medical Records (EMR) to enter test orders and documentation.
  • Explains procedures to patients, alleviate anxiety, and monitor patient comfort during the draw.
  • Prepares, processes, and transports specimens, often utilizing pneumatic tube systems.
