Job description

Senior Specialist, Banner Student - South Campus
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Maintains, updates, and provides support for the Banner Student module and other related Student system software. Serve as a liaison between the College's ITS and software end users. Demonstrate expertise using Banner to evaluate system performance and improve business processes across varied college areas. The Senior Specialist functions also includes interpreting complex information and making evaluative determinations and recommendations and is the backup for the Manager of Banner Student System Services.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Serves as the Senior Banner Specialist for all student information system users, primarily Student Services and instructional divisions.
  • Troubleshoots and solves problems for the Banner Student and Texas Connection Consortium (TCC) modules.
  • Collaborates with the curriculum department to ensure transition of requirements from committee to Banner/Degree Works (DGW) is successful. Includes maintenance of Courseleaf CIM software, review, troubleshooting and finalize data transfer.
  • Assist with implementation projects, including scheduling meetings, working with implementation consultants/partners, preparing test plans, completing/monitoring end user testing, meeting with stakeholders and gathering feedback, training end users, creating training guides, etc.
  • Assist Banner Manager with reporting and end user solutions as delivered by Ellucian Banner and TCC Banner. Document changes being made in cooperation with impacted areas.
  • Plans and assists implementation of Security Access Role based format. Collaborates with end users to determine access requirements.
  • Reviews, troubleshoots, and finalizes End-of-Term jobs and reports to roll grades to academic history, calculate credit hours, GPA, and academic standing for each part of term.
  • Reviews, troubleshoots, and finalizes Beginning of Term dates for each part of term and enter the information that drives registration, drop/adds, refunds, etc.
  • Acts as liaison between end users of managed software and ITS.

Additional Job Functions:
  • Serves on appropriate committees and task forces to represent Danner Student System Services.
  • Continues professional development through attending workshops, conferences and other staff development events.
  • Maintains program codes in ApplyTexas application external database.
  • Updates Texas Common Course Number System (TCCNS) for SJCD on TCCNS external database.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to demonstrate the College values.
  • Proven ability to develop an in-depth knowledge of the functional use of a student information system and related technologies.
  • Must possess excellent organizational, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to generate and identify opportunities to improve present programs and/or operations.
  • Ability to organize and implement change.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office software, including word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and presentation software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to establish personal and professional credibility with both internal and external constituents.
  • Ability to safeguard sensitive or confidential information from intentional or unintentional disclosure.
  • Ability to meet deadlines for assigned reports and projects.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical and functional issues within the Banner Student module.
  • Knowledge of Scribe language and the functionality of Degree Works preferred.
  • Some technical knowledge of Oracle database tables and SQL is helpful, but not required.

Required Education:
  • Bachelor's degree

Required Experience:
  • Five years of Ellucian product experience in either Banner Application Navigator (INB) or Degree Works.
  • Three years of experience in the Banner Student Module or DGW Functional Management.
  • Three years working in higher education with experience in at least two of the following areas:
    • ITS
    • Admissions
    • Registration
    • Curriculum
    • Texas Success Initiative (TSI)
    • Texas State Reporting
  • Experience in training and support of student information system end users.

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience with Courseleaf Software: CAT, CIM, or PATH.
  • Additional Banner Module experience is preferred, i.e. Finance, HR, Financial Aid.
  • Experience serving on an implementation team supporting Banner or Degree Works.

Note: This position has opportunity for limited remote work arrangements with appropriate approvals and in accordance with the policies, procedures, and needs of the College.
