Position Overview
The Band Saw Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining industrial band saw equipment to accurately cut steel materials according to work orders and production specifications. This role ensures material is cut to the correct dimensions while maintaining quality standards, production efficiency, and a safe working environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate horizontal and/or vertical band saws according to production schedules, work orders, and specifications.
  • Measure, mark, and cut steel bars, grating, plate, and other metal materials to required lengths and tolerances.
  • Select and install the appropriate saw blades based on material type, thickness, and cutting requirements.
  • Adjust machine settings including feed rate, blade speed, guides, and clamping devices to optimize cutting performance.
  • Load, position, and secure materials using overhead cranes, forklifts, hoists, or other approved material handling equipment.
  • Inspect finished cuts using measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, and squares to verify dimensional accuracy and quality standards.
  • Remove burrs or sharp edges as required and ensure finished materials are properly identified and staged for the next production process.
  • Monitor saw blade condition and perform routine blade changes, adjustments, and preventative maintenance.
  • Maintain production output while minimizing material waste and downtime.
  • Complete production documentation, including material usage, cut lists, and production reports.
  • Identify equipment malfunctions or maintenance needs and promptly report issues to the Supervisor.
  • Follow all company safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe material handling practices.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area using 5S and housekeeping standards.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and assist with other production duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience operating industrial band saws or other metal fabrication equipment preferred.
  • Experience in a manufacturing, steel fabrication, or metal processing environment preferred.
  • Ability to read blueprints, work orders, and cut lists.
  • Ability to accurately use measuring devices including tape measures, calipers, and squares.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform machine adjustments and minor maintenance.
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts and overhead cranes (or willingness to become certified).
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality products.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during shifts.
  • Ability to frequently lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely handle heavy steel materials using mechanical lifting equipment.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toe boots, and other required safety gear.
Working Conditions
  • Manufacturing/plant environment.
  • Regular exposure to moving machinery, overhead cranes, forklifts, metal dust, noise, and varying temperatures.
  • Work around sharp metal materials, cutting equipment, and industrial machinery while following established safety procedures.
