Job description

For almost 130 years, Abel & Schafer has been producing baked goods in Europe under the KOMPLET brand name. In 1982 the company established a manufacturing facility in Ronkonkoma, NY to serve the fast-growing markets of the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central/South America, and the Caribbean. To support our continuous growth, we are currently recruiting a Bakery Technologist. This is a hands-on technical bakery position responsible for developing, testing, refining, and supporting the commercialization of bread and pastry products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, test, and refine bread and pastry formulas, including hands-on bench, pilot, and plant trials.
  • Troubleshoot dough, baking, texture, appearance, and product performance issues; report non-conforming products and recommend corrective actions.
  • Evaluate ingredients, maintain raw and finished product samples, and support product improvements and new product development based on market trends.
  • Assist with scaling products from R&D trials into commercial production and support commercialization and first production runs.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate formulas, specifications, trial results, samples, and product records in company databases.
  • Collaborate with R&D, Production, Quality, Sanitation, Purchasing, Sales, and vendors to address product and facility needs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work area and follow all SQF, cGMP, SSOP, safety, and LOTO requirements.
  • Maintain professional communication and provide timely updates to management regarding issues, discrepancies, and project status.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional bakery experience, with strong hands-on experience in bread and pastry.
  • Baking & Pastry Arts, Food Science, Bakery Science, or related education preferred.
  • Experience with bakery ingredients, product commercialization, and plant scale-up preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, and typing.
  • Able to read, write, and speak English.
  • Professional attitude and ability to work effectively with others.
  • Must successfully complete all required in-house certifications and training.
  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand for extended periods and perform hands-on bakery work, including bending, reaching, lifting, and moving ingredients, samples, and equipment as required.

Work Environment

This position requires regular exposure to bakery ingredients, including flour and other food ingredients, as well as airborne food particles and dust. Candidates must be able to safely perform the essential functions of the position in this environment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
