Description The Supreme Court Administrator's Office is seeking a professional, service-oriented, motivated and reliable Deputy Bailiff who takes initiative and is committed to supporting the daily operations and security of Washington's highest court. This position helps manage courtroom proceedings, maintain official hearing records, prepare clear and objective reports and memoranda, and support the implementation of essential court security policies and procedures. As a key presence in the Temple of Justice, you help uphold order, protection, and security, ensuring a safe environment for judicial officers, court employees, and all visitors.
As a member of the Court's Bailiff and Security team, you will work alongside fellow Deputy Bailiffs under the leadership of the Bailiff/Security Officer and the Bailiff/Security Director. As part of the Supreme Court Administrator's Office, you will also collaborate with colleagues to support the Court's daily operations while cultivating a safe environment and a sense of belonging in support of the Court's effort to advance access to justice. This position requires sound judgement, professionalism, strong analytical and written communication skills, and the ability to work independently in a dynamic, highly visible environment.
You will interact regularly with judicial officers, court staff, attorneys, and the public, fostering positive relationships across the Court and the communities it serves. Successful candidates will understand the Washington State Supreme Court's commitment to advancing justice, as reflected in the Court's June 4, 2020 and June 5, 2026 letters. Duties Some of the duties you will perform are: Performs full Bailiff duties during in-person, hybrid, and virtual hearings, including opening and closing sessions, maintaining the official record, managing courtroom technology, and coordinating with IT, TVW, media, court staff, attorneys, and judicial officers.
Ensures safety and security within the Temple of Justice by monitoring surveillance systems, patrolling the facility, reporting incidents, partnering with law enforcement, and conducting safety and emergency-preparedness trainings. Provides security for off-site court events and conferences, including conducting security assessments, coordinating logistics with site staff, and supporting temporary courtroom setups. Collaborates with the Washington State Patrol, Department of Enterprise Services, and State Senate and House security teams to ensure coordinated security coverage for Capitol Campus and off-site events.
Supports the Court Bailiff with committee work, including preparing reports and memoranda, coordinating travel for the Traveling Court, and organizing equipment and supplies for travel sites. Responds to public inquiries, conducts tours of the Temple of Justice, assists with facility and materials management, and contributes to developing court-wide policies, procedures, and strategic planning related to operations and security. Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications The minimum qualifications for Deputy Bailiff are as follows: Completion of high school or a G.E.D.; and Four (4) years of experience working in a security or law enforcement role; and Experience with criminal investigations; and Experience coordinating on and off-site security matters with law enforcement or other branches of government; and Experience evaluating off-site locations and coordinating security; and Holds a Valid Washington State Driver's license; and Ability to lift, move and transport items weighing 40 pounds or more. Desired Qualifications The desired qualifications for the Deputy Bailiff are as follows: Experience as a commissioned law enforcement officer, with full police powers, in the last three years; Experience working as an investigator or as a detective; Experience working in Emergency Preparedness; Experience with dignitary protection civilian or military; Training in de-escalation and dealing with people in crisis. Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, including analyzing complex or emergency situations and determining appropriate actions. Ability to build effective working relationships with law-enforcement agencies and other security partners. Knowledge of the Washington court system, law-enforcement practices, emergency/security procedures, and skill in operating courtroom, office, and recording equipment.
Ability to lawfully carry and safely operate a firearm, lift/move 40 pounds, and perform related physical and security duties.
