Backstage Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Backstage Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backstage Developer, you need strong skills in JavaScript/TypeScript, experience with React, and familiarity with software development tools, along with a background in computer science or equivalent experience. Knowledge of Backstage’s framework, plugin development, CI/CD systems, and cloud platforms is typically required, and certifications in cloud services or DevOps can be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you work effectively within cross-functional teams and deliver scalable developer portals. These abilities are crucial for building, customizing, and maintaining platforms that streamline internal developer workflows and improve productivity.

What are some of the main challenges Backstage Developers face when integrating new plugins into existing platforms?

Backstage Developers often encounter challenges related to plugin compatibility, documentation gaps, and ensuring seamless integration with diverse internal tools. Each organization may have a unique tech stack, so adapting plugins to work smoothly requires strong problem-solving skills and cross-team collaboration. Additionally, maintaining consistent user experience and managing version upgrades can be complex, especially as the platform evolves. Working closely with platform engineers and end users is key to overcoming these hurdles and delivering robust solutions.

What are Backstage Developers?

Backstage Developers are software engineers who specialize in building, customizing, and maintaining developer portals using Backstage, an open-source platform created by Spotify. They help organizations organize their software infrastructure, integrate tools, and improve developer productivity by creating unified interfaces for internal services, documentation, and workflows. Their work often includes plugin development, API integration, and ensuring the platform meets the needs of engineering teams.

Responsibilities:
• Define and own the DevOps strategy and Target Operating Platform roadmap across all Lending Products
• Drive the organization's strategic shift to containerization, cloud-native, and cloud-agnostic architectures as the standard engineering baseline
• Partner with engineering leadership, architecture, and executive stakeholders to align the DevOps roadmap with business and technology strategy
• Champion a platform product mindset, treating internal engineering teams as customers, and continuously improving developer experience
• Build, lead, and scale a centralized shared DevOps team responsible for delivering self-service CI/CD frameworks to all product engineering teams
• Define and enforce standardized CI/CD pipelines, toolchains, and governance practices across all Corporate Lending products
• Develop reusable pipeline templates, infrastructure modules, and deployment blueprints that enable product teams to operate with speed and consistency
• Reduce outer-loop friction and drive automation across build, test, release, and deployment workflows
• Build and mature Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices from the ground up across the product portfolio
• Establish Service Level Objectives (SLOs), error budgets, observability standards, and incident response frameworks
• Drive a culture of operational excellence, proactive monitoring, and continuous reliability improvement
• Balance delivery velocity with system stability and client uptime commitments
• Design and publish standardized deployment patterns for clients, ensuring consistent, repeatable, and well-documented onboarding and release processes
• Reduce client-facing delivery risk and variability through structured deployment frameworks and validated reference architectures
• Collaborate with client-facing and product teams to align deployment standards with client expectations and contractual obligations
• Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing centralized DevOps engineering team
• Serve as a hands-on technical authority and trusted advisor for product teams navigating the cloud-native modernization journey
• Establish communities of practice and engineering guilds to drive knowledge sharing and standards adoption across product lines
• Own the roadmap for extending DevOps standards and platform practices into Retail Lending
Qualifications:
Required:
• 15–20 years of overall software engineering and technical leadership experience, with a strong and consistent focus on DevOps, platform engineering, infrastructure modernization, and cloud-native delivery
• 10+ years of hands-on experience in containerization, Kubernetes, and cloud-native platform engineering
• Deep expertise with at least one enterprise Kubernetes platform: Red Hat OpenShift, AWS EKS, or Azure AKS, with working knowledge of at least one additional platform strongly preferred
• Proven track record of building, leading, and scaling centralized DevOps or platform engineering teams that deliver shared, self-service CI/CD capabilities to multiple product teams
• Strong platform product mindset demonstrated ability to treat internal engineering teams as customers and drive developer experience as a first-class outcome
• Proven strategic thinking and roadmap ownership — ability to define a multi-year DevOps and platform vision, secure organizational buy-in, and execute incrementally
• Hands-on experience building and institutionalizing SRE practices, including SLOs, observability pipelines, error budgets, and incident management frameworks
• Experience defining and scaling standardized client deployment patterns in complex, multi-product or multi-client enterprise environments
• Deep expertise with modern CI/CD tooling (e.g., GitHub Actions, Tekton, ArgoCD, Jenkins, GitLab CI) and GitOps workflows
• Strong command of cloud-agnostic infrastructure principles, IaC tooling (Terraform, Helm, Kustomize), and secure software supply chain practices
• Demonstrated ability to influence and align senior stakeholders, architecture teams, and product engineering organizations in a large, matrixed enterprise
Preferred:
• Experience in Financial Services or a regulated industry environment
• Familiarity with enterprise lending platforms such as LoanIQ or comparable financial systems
• Background in Internal Developer Portal (IDP) tooling (e.g., Backstage) and platform engineering capability maturity models
• Knowledge of FinOps principles and cloud cost governance strategies
• Experience driving DevOps and platform standardization across multiple business lines
