What is a Background Removal job?

A Background Removal job involves editing images to remove or replace their backgrounds, typically using software like Photoshop or AI-based tools. This is commonly used in e-commerce, photography, graphic design, and marketing to create clean, professional-looking visuals. The goal is to isolate the subject, making it suitable for different backgrounds or transparent use. Skilled editors ensure smooth edges, proper detail preservation, and high-quality results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Background Removal position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Background Removal role, you need strong skills in digital image editing and a good understanding of graphic design principles, usually supported by experience or coursework in related fields. Proficiency with tools such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, or specialized background removal software is commonly required. Attention to detail, time management, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients or team members are valuable soft skills in this position. These skills ensure that images meet quality standards and client specifications in a timely and efficient manner.

What are the typical daily tasks for someone working in a background removal role?

Professionals in background removal roles generally spend their days editing images to extract subjects and provide clean, high-quality results by removing unwanted backgrounds. This may involve handling large batches of photos, following detailed client guidelines, and using advanced tools or techniques to maintain the integrity of the subject. Team collaboration is often part of the workflow, especially when coordinating with graphic designers or digital marketing teams to ensure images align with broader projects. Attention to turnaround times and precision is important, and clear communication helps manage client feedback and project adjustments. As you gain experience, you may also take on more complex projects or training responsibilities within the team.

We pay competitively based on market data and the scope of each role. Slate offers a strong base salary, meaningful equity, and benefits designed to support your whole self. We share salary ranges upfront in our hiring process because we believe transparency is the foundation of trust.
The Pitch
Slate's product already uses AI across the stack โ€” background removal, active speaker detection, auto-captioning, content suggestions, and image generation โ€” but each of these is its own independent integration. We need a Senior Backend Engineer focused on AI to bring this together: unifying how we integrate models, building the infrastructure that makes AI features reliable at scale, and helping us move faster on the next wave of AI-powered capabilities.
What You'll Actually Do
Build the AI platform layer
Design and build the shared infrastructure for AI integrations across Slates backend: model routing, prompt management, response caching, fallback handling, and cost observability
Refactor existing one-off AI integrations (background removal, captioning, etc.) onto a unified platform
Own the reliability, performance, and cost-efficiency of Slates AI systems
Enable new AI features
Work closely with the AI Product Engineer and product team to bring new AI capabilities to production
Build the backend systems that power real-time AI features โ€” handling streaming, async processing, and latency constraints
Evaluate and integrate new models and APIs as they become available
Raise the quality bar
Define evaluation frameworks and monitoring to track AI feature quality over time
Build systems to detect and alert on model regressions or degraded outputs
Ensure AI features meet the same reliability bar as the rest of Slates infrastructure
You'd Be a Great Fit If
You have the experience:
5+ years of backend engineering experience, with a track record of shipping production systems
Handsโ€on experience integrating and operating LLMs or ML models at scale
Strong systems thinking โ€” you design for reliability, observability, and cost from the start
You've done work like this before:
Built shared AI infrastructure used by multiple teams or features
Designed async processing pipelines for ML workloads
Worked with OpenAI, Anthropic, Replicate, or similar APIs in production
You work the way we work:
You own the outcomes, not just the tasks
You communicate clearly and raise issues early
You use AI tools in your own workflow and think about how to apply them to hard engineering problems
Tech Stack
Node.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Redis, AWS, OpenAI / Anthropic APIs, Replicate
