What does a backend software developer do?

A Backend Software Developer is responsible for building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and application programming interfaces (APIs) that power web and mobile applications. They ensure that data is properly stored, secured, and retrieved, and that the backend communicates effectively with the frontend or user-facing side. Backend developers often work with programming languages like Java, Python, Ruby, or Node.js, and use frameworks and tools to optimize application performance and scalability. Their work is crucial for ensuring that applications run smoothly, handle user requests efficiently, and remain secure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend software developer?

To thrive as a Backend Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, Python, or Node.js), a solid understanding of algorithms, data structures, and database management, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with frameworks (like Spring or Django), RESTful APIs, version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms is typically expected, along with relevant certifications being beneficial. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are the soft skills that set outstanding backend developers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for building scalable, reliable, and secure server-side applications that meet business and user needs.

What are some common challenges faced by backend software developers when integrating new technologies into existing systems?

Backend Software Developers often encounter challenges when integrating new technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, maintaining data integrity during migrations, and minimizing downtime for end users. They must also carefully manage dependencies and address potential security vulnerabilities introduced by new components. Collaboration with DevOps, frontend teams, and QA is crucial to ensure smooth deployment and comprehensive testing throughout the integration process.

What is the difference between Backend Software Developer vs Frontend Software Developer?

Job description

ABOUT THIS ROLE

As a Senior Backend Software Engineer at LVT, you will be a key driver in building scalable, production-grade microservices and APIs that power our intelligent site platform. Working as an individual contributor alongside a dedicated software engineering team, you will design, code, and deploy high-performance backend systems while upholding strict software craftsmanship standards. Success in this role means consistently shipping resilient product features, optimizing critical backend infrastructure, and mentoring fellow engineers through thoughtful code reviews and technical collaboration.

This role is onsite based out of our American Fork, UT headquarters.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design & Ship Backend Services: Architect, implement, and maintain high-velocity backend features and API endpoints using Node.js and TypeScript.

  • Ensure High System Performance: Optimize backend system architecture, API latency, and database query performance to support expanding platform scale.

  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner closely with Product Management, QA, and DevOps to translate feature requirements into clear technical specifications, accurate estimations, and timely releases.

  • Elevate Code Quality: Champion engineering best practices by driving rigorous unit testing, conducting constructive code reviews, and maintaining comprehensive technical documentation.

  • Debug & Resolve Complex Technical Issues: Perform root-cause analysis on complex production defects, resolving edge cases swiftly to preserve uptime and data integrity.

  • Provide Peer Mentorship: Offer technical guidance and feedback to fellow engineers, fostering a continuous learning environment across the engineering team.

  • Streamline Engineering Processes: Contribute to continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, automated testing, and developer tooling to improve delivery efficiency.

  • Stay Current on Emerging Tech: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of modern cloud architecture, server frameworks, and backend patterns to keep LVT's systems cutting-edge.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Technical Background: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

  • Proven Backend Expertise: 5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience with a track record of shipping production-level microservices and APIs.

  • Strong Node.js & TypeScript Skills: 3+ years of hands-on experience building and maintaining robust backend services in Node.js and TypeScript.

  • API Development: Hands-on experience designing and integrating RESTful APIs (OpenAPI) and/or GraphQL queries and mutations.

  • Modern Frameworks & Infrastructure: Familiarity with modern server frameworks (such as NestJS) and containerized workflows utilizing Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD tools.

  • Database Proficiency: Practical experience with relational database systems (SQL) and schema design optimization.

  • Problem-Solving Ability: Strong analytical skills with a proven track record of solving complex technical problems amidst evolving requirements.

  • Quality & Detail Oriented: A strong commitment to code cleanliness, thorough unit/integration testing, and building maintainable backend software.

  • Strong Collaboration Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the agility to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced Agile environment.
