What is a backend engineer?

Backend Engineers are software developers who focus on building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web and mobile applications. They ensure that the data requested by the frontend systems is delivered efficiently and securely. Their work involves writing code in languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, integrating with databases, and optimizing the overall performance of applications. Backend Engineers also play a crucial role in ensuring data integrity and implementing security best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backend Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, a solid understanding of algorithms, and experience with databases, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools such as RESTful APIs, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), version control systems (like Git), and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) is common. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are essential for building robust, scalable systems and collaborating efficiently within development teams.

What are some common challenges backend engineers face when integrating new technologies into existing systems?

Backend Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, maintaining data consistency, and minimizing service disruptions during deployment. They must carefully plan migrations, coordinate with frontend and DevOps teams, and implement thorough testing to avoid introducing bugs or security vulnerabilities. Effective communication and documentation are key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring a smooth transition.

What is the difference between Backend Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectBackend EngineerSoftware Developer
Primary FocusDesigning, building, and maintaining server-side applications and databasesDeveloping software across various layers, including frontend and backend
Skills & CertificationsProficiency in server-side languages (e.g., Java, Python), databases, APIsProficiency in multiple programming languages, software design, and sometimes frontend skills
Work EnvironmentTypically in backend teams, working on server infrastructure and APIsCan work on full-stack or specific areas; broader scope
Industry UsageCommon in tech companies, startups, and enterprises focusing on backend systemsWidespread across all software development sectors

While both roles involve coding and software development, Backend Engineers specialize in server-side logic, databases, and APIs, whereas Software Developers may work on both frontend and backend components. The roles often overlap, but Backend Engineers focus more on the infrastructure that powers applications.

Are backend engineers still in demand?

Backend engineers are currently in high demand due to the ongoing need for server-side development, cloud computing, and scalable systems. Skills in programming languages like Java, Python, and frameworks such as Node.js are highly valued, and experience with database management and API development enhances job prospects.

What's a typical backend engineer salary?

A backend engineer's salary varies based on experience, location, and company size, but typically ranges from $70,000 to $130,000 annually in many regions. Senior roles or those with expertise in cloud services, databases, and programming languages like Java or Python tend to earn higher salaries. Entry-level positions usually start around $60,000 to $80,000, with benefits often including health insurance and paid time off.

Job description

Job Summary:
Aplazo is a company focused on empowering financial access and innovation in Latin America. They are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to build scalable backend systems that support their merchant clients across Mexico, while fostering a culture of teamwork and continuous learning.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Scale our Core Services Ecosystem: You will help architect and build the backend systems that our Customers and internal teams interact with every day. As we grow, these systems will need to be stable, fast, and scalable. You will need to set objectives and be accountable for completing them.
โ€ข Solve Problems: This is first and foremost your responsibility as an Engineer. You have many tools at your disposal (Development, communication, new process). Figure out what needs to be done to solve platform and core problems, verify, and execute.
โ€ข Technical work: Write (and/or learn) plenty of sustainable, testable, high-quality, high-performance code (and be willing to be mentored on how to do the same).
โ€ข Team work: Be proactive, ask, and participate in discussions on topics such as testing, and code quality. Donโ€™t be afraid to approach others with technical questions/problems.
โ€ข Practice the ways of Devops - Improving our processes, feedback, systems, culture, and workflows in order to empower autonomous technical teams to deliver the greatest value is essential to our mission.
โ€ข Foster a culture of observability and monitoring: Be open to learning how to use operational data to help your team improve the stability and performance of our systems. Help to foster a culture of measuring, validating, and acting upon data.
โ€ข Learn and Evolve: Be open to learning how to scale yourself, taking feedback, and also help others to scale their own talents.
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข 4+ years in developing integration software systems.
โ€ข Experience working on teams and projects that have dealt with E-commerce APIs and distributed systems.
โ€ข You write code thatโ€™s easily readable, testable, and maintainable.
โ€ข You have worked with some/all of our technology stack: Backend (Java) (w/ some Python and Go mixed in AWS tools (ECS, Lambdas), Ci/CD(Pulumi, Jenkins), Observability (DataDog).
โ€ข Good habits with technical documentation and knowledge sharing.
โ€ข You have heard of people over process (Agile), but understand that good process leads to better work (Devops).
โ€ข You understand that workflow hygiene (well defined user-stories/tasks and estimation) is important.
โ€ข You are good at managing the ambiguity of a rapidly-growing company: adjusting to changing priorities, and asking for help when guidance is limited and information is incomplete.
โ€ข Excellent communication skills: Understand the importance of sharing and collaborating with peers both verbally and in writing (in Spanish, with ability to also communicate with vendors or teammates in English as necessary).
โ€ข You work well on team projects with multiple stakeholders, contributors, and are comfortable contributing to technical projects for your team.
โ€ข You have a growth mindset and seek mentorship to be your best self.
โ€ข You have worked in Fintechs with Backend/API teams.
โ€ข You are comfortable working and discussing common backend patterns.
โ€ข You have heard of the State of Devops.
โ€ข You have worked with/heard of Oncall and Incident Response processes.
โ€ข You favor regular, incremental delivery of value over perfection.
โ€ข You like small units of work, PR comments, and feedback.
โ€ข Youโ€™re excited about ensuring that all of our systems-software and human-scale smoothly.
โ€ข You strive for continuous learning and improvement for yourself and your team.
