What is a back up nanny?

A back up nanny is a childcare professional who provides temporary care for children when the primary caregiver or regular nanny is unavailable due to illness, vacation, or emergencies. Back up nannies are often hired on short notice to fill in gaps in childcare coverage, ensuring that parents have reliable support when unexpected situations arise. Their responsibilities typically mirror those of a regular nanny, including supervising children, preparing meals, and engaging in age-appropriate activities. Many families arrange for back up nannies through agencies or specialized services to ensure vetted, trustworthy care. This role is essential for working parents who need flexible, dependable childcare options.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Back Up Nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Back Up Nanny, you need experience in childcare, a basic understanding of child development, and often CPR/first aid certification. Familiarity with communication apps for parents, child safety systems, and scheduling tools is typically required. Reliability, flexibility, and excellent interpersonal skills help you quickly build trust with families and adapt to new routines. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring children's safety, meeting families' needs, and providing seamless care at short notice.

What are some common challenges a Back Up Nanny may face, and how can they be managed?

Back Up Nannies often step in at short notice, which can mean quickly adapting to new routines, household rules, and children's personalities. Building rapport and trust with both the children and parents in a limited timeframe can be challenging. To manage these situations, it's helpful to communicate clearly with parents about expectations, ask for a quick rundown of the child's routine, and stay flexible. Familiarizing yourself with age-appropriate activities and safety protocols can also help you provide seamless care, even in unfamiliar environments.

  • Networking Opportunities. Our families work at a variety of businesses: from hospitals to universities; tech companies or national retailers, we support families across the country and across all professions. We love hearing about the opportunities presented to our sitters because of the bond they built with the families they work with!
  • Payroll Benefits. Yearly W-2, social security benefits, paid overtime, sick pay, and an earning history used for building and maintaining positive financial history.
  • Agency Standards and Resume-building Employment. Legal protection from harassment, non-payment for hours worked or cancellations, and unsafe working conditions. We've got your back and we stay current with labor and industry standard guidelines.
  • Safe Workplace Environment. As we continue to monitor the progression of COVID-19, our top priority is the health and safety of our caregivers and families. We are following updates and guidance from the CDC, as well as state and local authorities, and staying informed on best practices.

  • Being available to work at least 3 days a week (Monday- Saturday) from 7am-7pm ensures we can provide you with a consistent volume of work. After-school hours are also available. Looking for really part time? We can get you into our weekend sitter program working 4+ hour shifts a few weekend days per month.
  • Your 2 or more years of experience (paid or unpaid!) working with children means you can provide 2 glowing references to tell us about your childcare experience. And, we'll want a character reference as well!
  • You'll have the ability to reach assignments with a safe and reliable vehicle, current First Aid and CPR (or willingness to become certified), up to date vaccinations (including COVID) and a clean background screen.
  • You will want to ensure the safety of the children in your care at all times, and maximize your time with the kiddos with engagement and active attention.
