Back End Programming information

What are some common challenges faced by back end programmers when working on cross-functional teams?

Back end programmers often collaborate closely with front end developers, designers, and product managers, which can present challenges such as aligning technical back end solutions with user-facing requirements and timelines. Communication gaps may occur when translating business goals into technical tasks or integrating APIs with front end components. Staying adaptable and maintaining clear documentation can help back end programmers ensure smooth collaboration and project success in a cross-functional environment.

What does a back end programmer do?

A back end programmer develops and maintains the server-side components of web applications, including databases, server logic, and APIs. They use programming languages like Java, Python, or Ruby and work with frameworks and tools to ensure data is processed efficiently and securely. Strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of server management are essential for this role.

What is back end programming?

Back end programming refers to the development of server-side logic, databases, and application programming interfaces (APIs) that power the functionality of web and mobile applications. Back end programmers write code that handles data storage, processing, and security, allowing the front end (what users see) to interact with servers and databases. Common back end languages include Python, Java, Ruby, PHP, and Node.js. These developers ensure that applications run smoothly, securely, and efficiently behind the scenes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a back end programmer?

To thrive as a Back End Programmer, you need strong proficiency in server-side languages (such as Java, Python, or Node.js), knowledge of databases (SQL/NoSQL), and a solid understanding of algorithms and data structures. Familiarity with frameworks (like Django, Spring, or Express), RESTful API development, and version control systems (e.g., Git) is typically required, along with relevant certifications or a computer science degree. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and troubleshooting complex issues. These competencies ensure robust, scalable, and maintainable back end systems that support seamless application performance.

What is the difference between Back End Programming vs Front End Development?

AspectBack End ProgrammingFront End Development
Primary FocusServer-side logic, databases, application architectureUser interface, website layout, client-side interactions

Back End Programming focuses on server-side development, managing databases, and application logic, while Front End Development centers on creating the visual and interactive aspects of websites. Both roles are essential for full-stack development but differ in skills, tools, and daily tasks.

Platform Engineer - Backend & CMS Integration

Allen Media Group

Atlanta, GA โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 28 days ago

Job description

Job Summary:
Allen Media Group is a leading media company that operates Local Now, a free ad-supported streaming service. They are seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to manage backend services and content-management integration for their streaming platform, ensuring smooth content delivery and robust privacy architecture.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Design, build, and operate backend services that abstract our content management system and serve content to client apps across many device platforms.
โ€ข Define and evolve API contracts for cross-platform client consumption, including content metadata, playback manifests, ad-decision endpoints, and personalization signals.
โ€ข Partner with the CMS vendor and internal stakeholders to integrate, troubleshoot, and extend content workflows end-to-end.
โ€ข Implement privacy-first patterns server-side: consent propagation, data minimization, DSAR plumbing, and PII handling at the platform layer.
โ€ข Instrument the platform for observability and operational analytics โ€” error rates, latency, content-availability, and ad-decisioning performance.
โ€ข Work with frontend, platform, and ad-tech engineers to ensure the backend evolves in step with what clients and monetization actually need.
โ€ข Contribute to architecture review, code review, and the broader engineering bar of the team.
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข 7+ years of backend engineering experience building production services at scale.
โ€ข Strong proficiency in C# and .NET Core, along with Go, Kotlin, Python, TypeScript/Node, or similar, and the discipline to write services that are maintainable years from now.
โ€ข Experience integrating with third-party SaaS platforms โ€” particularly those that own a critical part of the user-facing experience (CMS, identity, billing, ad-serving).
โ€ข Solid grasp of API design, distributed-systems patterns, caching, queueing, and the operational realities of running services in production.
โ€ข Deep experience with ad tech ecosystems, including server-side ad insertion (SSAI) with MediaTailor, beaconing, and integrating Ad SDKs such as The Trade Desk (UID2) and SpringServe.
โ€ข Cloud platform experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including IaC patterns and secure-by-default service deployment.
โ€ข Awareness of privacy, security, and compliance considerations as engineering concerns, not legal afterthoughts.
โ€ข Excellent collaboration skills; comfortable working with vendors, frontend teams, and product partners simultaneously.
โ€ข Extensive experience with SQL, including writing stored procedures, and designing scalable analytics table structures.
Preferred:
โ€ข Experience integrating with a media-industry CMS (Quickplay, Brightcove, Vimeo OTT, MediaKind, or similar).
โ€ข Streaming or media-tech background โ€” playback manifests, ad-stitching/SSAI, DRM, content packaging.
โ€ข Familiarity with privacy/consent technology (Fides, OneTrust, Ethyca, or similar) and DSAR engineering workflows.
โ€ข Experience using AI coding assistants effectively to ship more in less time without sacrificing quality.
Company:
Allen Media Group is a global media production and distribution company. Founded in 1993, the company is headquartered in Los Angeles, USA, with a team of 501-1000 employees. The company is currently Late Stage.
