Research & Development Scientist

Ypsilanti, MI


We are supporting hiring efforts for our long-standing client, a global automotive glass manufacturer, to find an R&D Research Scientist for their Ypsilanti facility. This Scientist will lead technical problem-solving and provide scientific guidance through hands-on research, development and validation in support of global product development and manufacturing of advanced glass and glazing products. This is a hybrid opportunity.


Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage multiple complex R&D projects and activities for glass and glazing products simultaneously.
  • Design and execute complex qualitative and quantitative experiments.
  • Interpret and communicate experiment results to develop new products, processes or technical knowledge and communicate results.
  • Drive the concept, design, and development of new materials, technologies and processes within cross-functional project teams.
  • Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis of complex product or process issues and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Prepare and deliver high-impact technical reports, presentations and publications to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Interpret customer specifications and validate products against defined requirements.
  • Assure that all duties and responsibilities are accomplished within company policies and guidelines.


Requirements:

  • 10+ years progressive R&D experience in ceramic and/or glass materials within automotive, coatings or related industries.
  • Bachelor Science degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or related engineering discipline.
  • Mastersโ€™ degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of glass or ceramic systems, including composition, processing, phase transformations, crystallization behavior and structureโ€“property relationships.
  • Demonstrated leadership of ceramic or glass development projects, including product investigations, root cause analyses and failure evaluations.
  • Experience in ceramic and glass materials formulation and processing.
  • Use of analytical and test methods (e.g., DSC/TGA, SEM, XRD), chemical and mechanical testing and interpretation of results to support development decisions.
