What is an AWS internship?

An AWS internship is a temporary position offered by Amazon Web Services for students or recent graduates interested in gaining hands-on experience with cloud computing technologies. Interns work on real-world projects, often collaborating with experienced engineers and teams to develop, deploy, and maintain AWS solutions. These internships provide valuable exposure to cloud infrastructure, software development, and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment, helping participants build skills for future careers in technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AWS intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AWS Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of cloud computing fundamentals, programming skills (such as Python or Java), and current enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with AWS services (like EC2, S3, and Lambda), experience using the AWS Management Console, and AWS Cloud Practitioner or Associate-level certifications are often beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication set standout interns apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for quickly adapting to AWS environments, contributing to projects, and collaborating with experienced cloud professionals.

What types of projects do AWS interns typically work on, and how much responsibility can I expect to have?

As an AWS intern, you can expect to work on real-world projects that directly impact products and services used by customers globally. Interns are often assigned to teams where they contribute to tasks such as developing cloud solutions, optimizing infrastructure, or creating automation tools. While responsibilities vary based on the team and project, interns are encouraged to take ownership of their work, collaborate with experienced engineers, and present their results. This structure provides hands-on experience and opportunities to learn from industry experts, making the internship both challenging and rewarding.

Job description

Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides companies of all sizes with an infrastructure web services platform in the cloud. With AWS, you can requisition compute power, storage, and other services - paying as you go for only the resources you need. Within AWS, our Catalog solutions span Glue Data Catalog, Lake Formation, and DataZone. We offer customers a comprehensive inventory of an organization's assets, enrich this view through metadata, and provide data discovery, governance, trust, and query routing functionality. Catalogs are at the forefront of modern Analytics, acting as the bridge between the consumption layer and data services. They effectively enable Engines to query information and allow humans and AI to find semantic meaning in data. Our suite of Catalog services make it easy to set up a secure data lake in days. A data lake is a centralized, curated, and secured repository that stores all your data, both in its original form and prepared for analysis. A data lake enables you to break down data silos and combine different types of analytics to gain insights and guide better business decisions.
Joining the AWS Catalog organization gives you the opportunity to:
- Work on a disruptive product that's still in its early stages
- Solve challenging problems that will revolutionize database computing in the cloud
- Build a product that will leverage the scale of resources available in the cloud
- Work for a company that's a recognized leader in the cloud computing space
- Be involved in the fast growing, big data space
We are looking for developers with expertise and passion for building large-scale data-intensive systems and distributed systems. In particular, we are looking for developers that want to work on the next generation big data systems that will transform data management on AWS and across the industry.
Experience with large scale data analytics, big data platforms, highly available/fault tolerant systems, replicated data storage, and operating complex services running in the cloud are all pluses.
Key job responsibilities
In this role, you will have responsibility for:
- Translating functional and technical requirements into detailed architecture and design
- Coding and testing complex system components
- Participating in code and design reviews to maintain our high development standards
- Working with other teams to deliver and operate large scale, distributed services in the cloud
- Overall system architecture, scalability, reliability, and performance
- Mentoring other engineers, defining our challenging technical culture, and helping to build a fast-growing team
