Primary Purpose
The Assistant Professor of Aviation, Airplane provides instruction to students in the Aviation program, directs student discussion and evaluates student performance in the classroom. In addition, this position develops curriculum, assesses student learning, and provides student advising.
Perform and work closely and effectively with faculty, outside aviation contractors, veteran's financial aid coordinator, fiscal services and have an aviation background with experience in teaching airplane courses strongly preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction in area of discipline, using approved course outcome guides. Teaching assignments may be during the day (including early morning), evening, or weekend, and could include classes taught at any of the College campuses.
  • Provide student advising and assistance in areas of course selection, career planning, job placement and employment follow-up.
  • Hold at least five scheduled office hours per week for student help sessions and program assistance.
  • Participate in department meetings, curriculum revision, course assessment, program assessment, and program review.
  • Engage in regular professional growth activities, remain current in the field, and maintain current credentials or licensures as required by the program.
  • Participate in service to the college. This may include participating in College committees, taskforces, peer teams, or other activities.
  • Provide meaningful, professional service to the community, businesses, public agencies, and other organizations.
  • Perform other essential job functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Department Specific
  • This position has an anticipated start date is for Winter Term, January 4th, 2027.
  • Provide academic instruction in the area of aviation, emphasis on fixed wing (see COCC web site for course descriptions). Full-time classroom teaching requires 45 load units per year, involving 12-40 students per class, approximately 2-3 classes per term. It also includes providing individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day, evening, occasional weekends and/or summers, both on and off campus.
  • As part of the Aviation team of full-time, tenure track instructors, assist in recruiting students, field inquiries, take prospective students on tours of the Bend airport facilities, and work with the flight contractors. Additionally, continuous interaction with the flight providers and other contracted aviation services (off campus) for purposes of tracking student progress and monitoring the quality of training is essential for sustainable success of the program.
  • Build proficiency in COCC airplane simulator operations, including training of new instructors on simulator policies and procedures.

  • Thorough knowledge in the field of taught discipline and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
  • Ability to adapt and use a variety of teaching and assessment techniques including the use of technology to enhance student success.
  • Ability to observe, direct, and oversee students ensuring safety in the classroom or laboratory.
  • Ability to work with and present various curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft office suite, various course management systems, technology to teach traditional, hybrid, or online courses and other technology used in the instruction setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members.
  • Ability to provide services to students in a manner which does not discriminate as to race, creed, religion, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, sexual preference or marital status.
  • Willingness to travel and or teach at various hours and campus locations, as required.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative atmosphere among students and the willingness to work as a member of a team with faculty.

Ergonomic Requirements
Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Requirements
Education:
  • A bachelor's degree or credential appropriate in the field of primary teaching assignment; or instructor has a minimum of 24 quarter hours (16 semester hours) of credit in the field of the primary teaching assignment.

Experience:
  • One-year relevant experience working in the field of aviation, such as extensive piloting in commercial or military aviation environment.
  • Evidence of excellence, or promise of excellence, in classroom instruction, minimum of 1,000 hours of aviation instruction.
  • Current FAA certified flight instructor (CFI) or FAA Ground Instructor

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
  • Master's Degree or equivalent level of practical experience.

Experience:
  • Evidence of excellence, or promise of excellence, in instruction, minimum of 1,000 hours of aviation instruction.
  • FAA Commercial Airplane or Helicopter Certification, Certified Flight Instructor with instrument (CFII).
  • Current FAA flight review.
  • 100 hours of flight and/or simulator time within the past 12 months.
