General Function:

Vertex Professional Services (VPS) is seeking an experienced Automotive Technical SME with strong dealership-level technical background. The primary focus of this role is the design, development, and validation of automotive service training content, including web-based modules, instructor-led materials, hands-on activities, and technical reference assets.


The ideal candidate has advanced automotive diagnostic experience, excellent technical writing skills, and a proven ability to translate complex system information into clear, engaging training content. Experience delivering technical training is essential, as it provides the practical insight needed to design effective courses and improve learner outcomes.


Responsibilities

This position description is subject to change at any time as needed to meet the requirements of the program or company.

Specific Duties:

  • Research and gather technical information from OEM engineering teams, service publications, diagnostic procedures, and subject matter experts to ensure training content is accurate and up to date.
  • Develop highquality automotive technical training materials, including webbased courses, instructor-led materials, and hands-on lab activities.
  • Translate complex automotive systems and diagnostic concepts into clear, concise, learner-friendly instructional content suitable for various training formats.
  • Validate technical accuracy of all training content through hands-on testing, review of procedures, and collaboration with other SMEs and engineers.
  • Collaborate closely with curriculum developers, instructional designers, and project managers to ensure content aligns with learning objectives, timelines, and OEM requirements.
  • Review, edit, and update existing training materials to reflect new technologies, updated repair procedures, or changes in OEM systems.
  • Support the creation of multimedia training assets, such as videos, graphics, animations, and interactive learning tools by working with creative teams and media producers.
  • Participate in course development planning, contributing to sequencing, flow, and instructional strategy for new and updated courses.
  • Ensure consistency and standardization across all training materials, including terminology, diagnostic strategies, and service procedures.
  • Provide technical expertise and feedback during design reviews, pilot sessions, and content testing.
  • Deliver training on an occasional or asneeded basis, including virtual, classroom, or hands-on instruction, to support pilot classes, SME validation sessions, or training center needs.
  • Assist in evaluating learner and instructor feedback to continually improve course effectiveness and technical accuracy.
  • Stay current with emerging automotive technologies, diagnostic tools, and repair processes to ensure content reflects modern service practices.
  • Maintain excellent documentation and project tracking to support workflow, quality assurance, and version control.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Minimum five years automotive technical experience, with broad understanding of modern vehicle systems (powertrain, electrical/electronic systems, HVAC, chassis, etc.)
  • Experience delivering instructorled training, technical presentations, or leading shop-level learning activities – Strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and electronic diagnostic strategies
  • Hands-on experience using OEM diagnostic scan tools, oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, and other advanced equipment
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams including curriculum developers, engineers, and training center staff
  • Intermediate computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office and basic multimedia tools
  • Ability to adapt instructional approaches to evolving automotive technologies

Desired Experience:

  • ASE certifications A1 through A8 – Strongly preferred
  • ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician – Preferred
  • Technical writing experience – Preferred
  • GM dealership technician background – Plus

Education:

  • Formal automotive technology training preferred, but not required
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
