This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to the office in [Austin, Detroit, Warren, Milford, Mountain View or Sunnyvale] a minimum of 3 days per week. This position can be considered Remote if the candidate is in the Seattle, Washington area.

The AI Cloud and Developer Infrastructure organization delivers and maintains the tools and services that engineers at GM use to build and advance our vehicles. Our work enhances the entire development process—from code checkout to deployment—ensuring that automotive engineers have world‑class tools and a seamless development experience.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Engineer with a strong background in developer tooling and a passion for productivity. As an IC leader on this team, you will guide the technical development of other engineers, balance business, user and engineering priorities, and drive measurable impact with minimal guidance.

The Team

Part of the AV Developer Productivity Org, the AV Developer Experience team creates and maintains a reliable inner‑loop development experience for AV developers at GM, enabling faster, higher‑quality code delivery.

Location & Travel

The role is hybrid. Candidates must report to a specific location at least 3 days a week and will be required to travel less than 25 %. Relocation benefits may be available.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)
  • Identify engineering pain points and propose, design, and implement reliable, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
  • Synthesize large amounts of company, org, and customer information to set priorities and influence the team’s technical roadmap.
  • Evaluate new tools and technologies through proofs of concept.
  • Ship improvements to AV development toolchains and services that have a measurable impact on engineering productivity and company metrics.
  • Drive software engineering best practices and create tooling that encourages them.
  • Help steer the engineering culture on the team.
  • Guide the team to balance impact delivery with technical debt management.
  • Mentor and grow engineers on the team.
  • Set an example of high accountability.
  • Execute and deliver impact both individually and through the team.
  • Set strong boundaries when selecting external requests and push back on requests that do not align with the team vision.
Minimum Qualifications (Must-Have)
  • 3+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production systems at scale in the cloud.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Understanding of AI engineering principles and concepts.
  • Experience designing highly scalable, reliable, and maintainable services.
  • Experience writing production‑scale code in Go or an equivalent language.
  • Understanding of Unix/Linux, SSH, and networking fundamentals.
  • Attention to detail and a desire to improve processes and systems.
  • Ability to lead and influence others, both internally and externally.
  • Principled reasoning and the ability to research, document, communicate, and defend proposals, and provide and take critical feedback.
  • Ability to make trade‑offs and communicate reasoning effectively.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, focus on shipping, and work effectively under pressure.
  • Passion for mentoring and growing junior engineers.
  • Passion for leveling up the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the team.
  • Passion for self‑driving technology and its impact on the world.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)
  • 5+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production systems at scale in the cloud.
  • Experience working with GCP.
  • Experience with gRPC, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience owning or contributing to Open‑Source projects.
