What is 3D engineering?

3D engineering is a multidisciplinary field that involves designing, creating, and analyzing three-dimensional objects or models using computer-aided design (CAD) software and other digital tools. It is widely used in industries such as manufacturing, architecture, automotive, aerospace, and entertainment for product development, prototyping, and visualization. 3D engineers work on both the technical and creative aspects of projects, collaborating closely with other professionals to bring ideas from concept to reality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D engineer?

To thrive as a 3D Engineer, you need strong skills in spatial reasoning, CAD modeling, and a background in engineering or a related technical field. Proficiency with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, and relevant certifications such as Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP), are typically required. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for this position. These skills are crucial for designing accurate models, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and delivering innovative engineering solutions.

What are some typical challenges faced by 3D engineers when working on cross-functional project teams?

3D Engineers often collaborate with designers, product managers, and manufacturing teams, which can present challenges such as aligning differing priorities, managing tight deadlines, and ensuring that 3D models meet both aesthetic and functional requirements. Effective communication is crucial to translate technical details for non-engineering colleagues and to incorporate feedback efficiently. Additionally, adapting to rapidly evolving 3D software tools and maintaining model accuracy under changing project scopes are common hurdles faced in this role.

What is the difference between 3D Engineering vs 3D Modeling?

Aspect3D Engineering3D Modeling
Required SkillsEngineering principles, CAD software, technical analysisArtistic design, creativity, modeling software proficiency
Work EnvironmentEngineering firms, manufacturing, product developmentAnimation studios, game design, visual effects
CertificationsEngineering degrees, CAD certificationsPortfolio, software certifications

While both roles involve 3D software, 3D Engineering focuses on technical design, functionality, and engineering analysis, often requiring engineering credentials. 3D Modeling emphasizes artistic creation and visual aesthetics, typically used in entertainment and design industries. Understanding these differences helps professionals choose the right career path or project focus.

Are 3D engineering jobs in demand?

3D engineering jobs are in demand across industries such as manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and entertainment, driven by advancements in CAD software, 3D modeling, and additive manufacturing. Professionals with skills in 3D design, simulation, and proficiency in tools like SolidWorks or AutoCAD are sought after, especially as companies adopt new technologies for product development and prototyping.

Is a 3D engineering job a good career?

A 3D engineering job involves designing and developing three-dimensional models and prototypes using CAD software and 3D printing tools. It is a growing field with opportunities in industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, and entertainment, often requiring technical skills and certifications. The career offers potential for advancement and specialization, depending on experience and industry demand.

What does a 3D engineer do?

A 3D engineer designs, develops, and tests three-dimensional models and prototypes for products, structures, or systems using CAD software and 3D modeling tools. They often collaborate with engineers, designers, and manufacturers to ensure accuracy and functionality in their designs, and may work in industries such as aerospace, automotive, or architecture.

3D Engineer

Moon

Glendale, CA • On-site

$130K - $160K/yr

Full-time

Job description

About Moon
Moon is an ambitious, independent vertical SaaS company incubated by Home Organizers, a market leader with decades of proven success in home organization through its subsidiaries, including Closet World, Closets by Design, and Brio Water Technology. Born inside one of the industry's largest operators - 6,000+ employees, hundreds of thousands of new customers served annually - Moon is built on a rare advantage: we build for the home improvement industry from within it.
Our mission is to reinvent the home improvement experience end to end. From AI-driven marketing and in-home 3D design to sales, service, and operations, Moon unifies the entire customer and business journey on a single platform - supercharged by Luna, our proprietary AI engine. Where most operators stitch together disconnected tools that don't understand the homeowner, we're building the unified operating system the industry has never had. We're a rapidly growing team of committed builders, driven to reimagine how this industry sells, designs, and delivers - and to power the next generation of operators, from single-location dealers to national franchise networks.
Role Overview
You will build Moon's 3D experience alongside senior engineers and a specialist manager - real-time 3D in React Three Fiber and Three.js that homeowners see in their own homes. You'll work across scene features, catalog-driven configuration, and the performance and data-optimization work that makes a field product fast on real tablets.
About the role
• You will join the ground floor of a new team with a clear technical mandate and a daily-shipping culture. You'll learn optimization craft from engineers who live it, making this the fastest place in the company to grow into a serious graphics engineer.
What you'll do
• Build features in the 3D experience: components, data-driven scene assembly, catalog-driven configuration of real products.
• Contribute to performance and data-optimization work: measure file sizes and load times, build pipeline tooling, chase regressions on real devices.
• Write tests and examples for the APIs you touch; keep the daily-shipping quality bar.
• Ship daily with AI-assisted workflows; grow toward owning subsystems.
Qualifications
• 2+ years of engineering with real Three.js, React Three Fiber, or strong WebGL exposure.
• Solid JavaScript/TypeScript; comfort with (or hunger for) the math of 3D - vectors, matrices, transforms.
• Interest in asset pipelines, data formats, and making things smaller and faster - evidence from work or side projects counts.
• Strong delivery record; eager to build deep expertise.
The pay range for this role is:
130,000 - 160,000 USD per year (Moon HQ)
