The Job The Sheriff's Department is seeking skilled Facilities Maintenance Mechanic Trainees who are responsible for the general maintenance, repair and modification of buildings, fixtures and equipment within the correctional/institutional facilities of the Sheriff's Department. Detention Differential: Employees in the classifications of Sheriff's Maintenance Mechanic Trainee and Sheriff's Maintenance Mechanic assigned to work at a detention center(s) shall be entitled to $1.50 per hour over and above their base hourly rate for hours actually worked at this facility. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT 1) Background: Prior to appointment, applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination

Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony. 2) Shift: The jail facilities operate 24/7, and require maintenance any time of the day or night; therefore, the ideal candidate is available to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call. 3) Travel: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position.

Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained. 4) Physical: Incumbents in these positions are required to climb ladders and to bend, stoop, twist and crawl in ditches, tunnels and tight mechanical spaces. Incumbents occasionally are required to lift or move heavy objects.

5) Promotion: Sheriff's Maintenance Mechanic Trainees are eligible for promotion to Sheriff's Maintenance Mechanic ($27.07 - $37.22 hourly) upon successful completion of training and probation; must be promoted to Sheriff's Maintenance Mechanic within 24 months or be terminated. 6) Sponsorship: Please note San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future. Minimum Requirements Must possess one of the following; Experience: Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience maintaining large commercial, large industrial or large institutional facilities, performing skilled tasks in one or more of the following trades: electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning

-OR- Certification: Certification from an accredited trade school or college in one or more of the following trades: electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning. Certificate MUST be attached with the application. NOTE: Residential or light commercial new construction experience is NOT considered qualifying.
