What is the difference between Automotive Marketing vs Automotive Sales?

AspectAutomotive MarketingAutomotive Sales
Primary FocusPromoting vehicles and brand awarenessDirectly selling vehicles to customers
Required SkillsMarketing strategies, digital advertising, brandingCustomer interaction, negotiation, product knowledge
Work EnvironmentMarketing departments, advertising agenciesDealerships, showrooms
Common CertificationsMarketing certifications, digital advertising coursesSales certifications, automotive product training

Automotive Marketing focuses on creating awareness and promoting vehicles through advertising and branding strategies, while Automotive Sales involves directly engaging with customers to close vehicle sales. Both roles are essential in the automotive industry but differ in their daily tasks and skill sets.

How does the automotive marketing role typically collaborate with sales teams to drive dealership success?

In Automotive Marketing, close collaboration with sales teams is essential to ensure that marketing campaigns effectively generate qualified leads and align with dealership goals. Marketers often coordinate with sales to understand current inventory, customer preferences, and promotional priorities, allowing for more targeted advertising and outreach. Regular meetings, shared analytics, and feedback loops help both teams refine strategies and measure the impact of marketing efforts on actual sales performance. This partnership not only boosts showroom traffic but also fosters a unified approach to customer engagement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in automotive marketing?

To excel in Automotive Marketing, you need a solid understanding of marketing principles, automotive industry trends, and often a relevant degree in marketing, business, or communications. Familiarity with digital marketing platforms, CRM systems, analytics tools, and certifications such as Google Ads or HubSpot are highly valued. Strong communication, creativity, and analytical thinking help differentiate successful professionals in this field. These skills ensure effective campaign execution, customer engagement, and measurable business growth in a competitive market.

What is automotive marketing?

Automotive marketing refers to the strategies and activities used by car manufacturers, dealerships, and related businesses to promote vehicles and automotive services to consumers. This type of marketing includes advertising campaigns, digital marketing, event promotions, and customer relationship management tailored specifically to the automotive industry. The goal is to increase brand awareness, generate leads, and drive sales in a highly competitive market by reaching potential buyers through various channels.

Job description

Account Executive, Automotive Digital Marketing

Territory-Based | Field Sales | LocaliQ | USA TODAY

Help Automotive Dealers Grow. Build Relationships. Drive Results.

At LocaliQ part of USA Today, we help automotive dealerships win in competitive markets through data-driven, full-funnel marketing strategies designed specifically for the automotive industry.

Who are we looking for?
  • 5+ years of digital automotive marketing experience REQUIRED
      • (Examples: vendor/agency auto experience, automotive media, or digital marketing serving dealers)
    • Strong understanding of automotive retail environment, including:
      • Dealer operations and decision-making structure
      • Sales & fixed ops priorities
      • Inventory-driven marketing strategies
    • Proven ability to build relationships with dealer principals, GMs, and marketing leaders
    • Experience selling or supporting digital marketing solutions

Our ideal candidate is a relationship-driven Account Executive with direct experience working with dealers-someone who understands dealership operations, advertising challenges, and how to drive measurable results through modern marketing solutions.

This is a dealer-facing, territory-based role where success comes from being in front of customers, understanding dealership KPIs, and delivering marketing strategies that impact vehicle sales, service traffic and market share.

What You’ll Do
  • Build and grow relationships with automotive dealership decision makers (GMs, Marketing Directors, Dealer Principals)
  • Drive new business while expanding and retaining dealer marketing partnerships.
  • Meet with dealership stakeholders face-to-face to uncover inventory, sales and marketing challenges.
  • Develop and present automotive-specific marketing strategies, including digital, audience targeting and local market positioning.
  • Translate dealer goals (sales, service, inventory turn, OEM compliance) into measurable marketing plans.
  • Manage your pipeline and opportunities through Salesforce
  • Partner with internal teams to deliver strong campaign results and long-term client success

What Makes This Role Different

This is not an inside sales or entry level role.

You will be working directly with auto dealerships and expected to speak their language - from inventory challenges and OEM programs, to lead generation and market competitiveness.

If you prefer selling behind a screen—this isn’t it, you will be boots on the ground.
If you thrive in the field and enjoy being a trusted advisor to dealers—this is for you.

What You Bring
  • Strong consultative selling and presentation skills
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently in the field
    • Proven track record of driving revenue growth, retaining accounts, and exceeding goals

What We Offer

Compensation

  • $60,000 -$70,000 + uncapped commission
  • OTE: $95K+
  • Top performers earn $140K+

Benefits & Perks

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k)
  • Paid time off
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Career growth opportunities
  • President’s Club and performance recognition

Ready to own your territory and help automotive clients grow? Apply today.
